Orthodox Scripture Studies What does the Bible say, what does the Bible mean and how can what the Bible says help us to become better Christians?

The Bible is the story of a loving and just creator God who created perfection that strayed from Him and of his effort to reconcile man back to Himself.

This Sunday Sts. Peter and Paul Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, we complete our journey through the Book of Proverbs with two main topics: "Without a Vision, the People Perish" (29:14), and the "Proverbs 31 Woman".

What is the vision God has given to you? What has Almighty God ignited inside of you for the Kingdom of God, for your life, for your family, and your function in the church?

People drift off into a world of distraction when they lack purpose and a sense of mission. There are many activities available for people today, so many worldly distractions. There are so many things we can enjoy in the generation of distractions that little work is done for the Church and God’s Kingdom.
A simple solution to the dilemma of distraction, and an essential ingredient to a life spent well is to find your passion – your reason for being on the earth. Each one of us needs to hear from God and get a passion for something that gives us a reason to get out of bed in the morning. When we give ourselves to our passion we are less likely to be distracted by the non-essentials of life,
What does it mean to have a passion or a vision from God and how do we get it? There is a reason why God’s people have visions that burn within them - Paul said in Romans, “...The God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.” (Rom 4:17). God wants to give you a vision for your life, your family, and your part in this church. Do you have goals for your marriage? For raising your children? For running your business? The power of focus is like a magnifying glass; it focusses energy into a single point of passion. Paul likened the Christian life to running a race, and having our eyes steadfastly fixed on the goal of winning the prize. There is power in a focused life. “He who focusses the most, wins.”
Many believers drift from their purpose and calling when they get distracted by worldly pleasures. The Bible says, “Narrow is the path that leads to life, and few there be that find it.” In other words, on the highway of life, many believers get distracted off the main road, and fail to enter into “life,” as God fully intended them to. The roadside is where all the rubbish in life collects. What a shame to leave the highway of God’s purpose for your life, to spend time being distracted by all the left-over rubbish! Without a vision, people perish on the wayside of life.
How do we get a vision from God? We need to humble ourselves before God and labor in prayer until we hear Him speak to our hearts. You will sense yourself becoming consumed with a burning passion to become more than you are, to do more than you have ever done for the Church, and to do it with excellence instead of mediocrity, and to never be distracted by your detractors.
Once God gives us a vision we must never turn back from what He has placed in our spirit and heart. Never stop pursuing the vision! Never let anyone tell you, “It can’t be done.” Automobile genius Henry Ford once came up with a revolutionary plan for a new kind of engine. We know it today as the V-8. Ford was eager to get his new idea into production. He had some of his men draw up plans and presented them to the engineers. As the engineers studied the drawings, one by one they came to the same conclusion. Their visionary boss just didn’t know much about the fundamental principles of engineering. He’d have to be told gently – his dream was impossible. When told, Henry Ford said, “Produce it anyway.” They said, “But it is impossible.” Ford said, “Go ahead, and stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required.” For six months they struggled with drawing after drawing, design after design. Another six months. Nothing. At the end of the year Ford checked with his engineers, and once again they told him that what he wanted was impossible. Ford told them to keep going. They did. And they discovered how to build a V-8 engine!
We must never let people detract or discourage us and we must also continue to listen to the Lord for His guidance and direction as we move forward. What is the vision God has given to you? What is it that Almighty God has ignited inside of you for the Kingdom of God, for your life, for your family, or for your function in the church?

What would you rather have great riches or a good name?
What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge?

Knowledge is simply acquiring information and we certainly could acquire much information in minutes. However, acquiring information does not produce wisdom; rather, it is taking the truths that have the greatest value and correctly applying them all aspects of your life.

Something to Think About: For decades, Bill Richardson, the former governor of New Mexico has listed in his bio that he was drafted to play for the Kansas City A's. It turns out that this is completely untrue. When probed further, Governor Richards responded, "In my mind, I would or could have been drafted."
Is there something in your mind that you feel so deeply about like former Governor Richards that you would have or could have done? The Book of Proverbs challenges you to improve your personal story…it is not too late to modify your own story and do what you always wanted to do.

On Day 1, we were given a handout with three things that you would like to accomplish that you would consider as being successful:

1. What do I want to let go of right now so I do not bring into my future?
2. What do I have right now that I want to keep and bring into my future?
3. What do I want to be in my future that is currently not in my present?

Please keep these questions in mind these two weeks and refer to them preferably in the morning when you read your Bible, and in the evening before you go to bed. You have to see yourself achieving these goals and ask God for His wisdom and guidance. Think of King Solomon as your personal advisor, business/family coach, telling you what you must do to accomplish the three things on your list.

Something to Think About: "A Christian Ending to our Life" is recited 2 x during our Divine Liturgy, and In 2 Corinthians 5:10, St. Paul states that we will have to give an account of our lives. As a wisdom hunter, ponder for the rest of your life what account you would give of your life.

Consider making a one-minute elevator speech to give to those who ask, "why are you going to church"; "Why do you believe in God?, "Why are you an Orthodox Christian?"
St. Peter states, "always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you." 1 Peter 3:15-17.

What's the difference between never starting and never finishing?
What is the difference between positive self-esteem and the destructive behavior of pride?

Tomorrow we continue our journey through the Book of Proverbs, and will discuss these two important concepts: Pride and Procrastination, how to recognize them, and how to overcome those negative traits.

Proverbs explains how to foster productivity and perseverance instead of passivity and procrastination.

Pride is a positive feeling of self-satisfaction and self-esteem derived from personal achievements, which can be good, and it can also be a negative trait characterized by excessive self-importance and arrogance.

If you had 10 minutes to live, what words of wisdom would you leave behind for those left behind? Tomorrow, we will delve into the literature of the Book of , discussing the choices that we make, good or bad, will have impact on those around us; "the butterfly effect refers to a concept that small causes can have large effects." As a metaphor for things and people who can and do make a difference, this effect can be witnessed throughout history and is just as powerful today. Believing that what we do makes a difference can predispose us to make better choices. Knowing that our actions today can and do assist others now and years ahead gives ordinary lives meaning and helps us determine the legacy that we want to leave beyond

Achieving breakthrough success through the journey of the Book of Proverbs. Women’s Bible Study starting this Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in South Bend, Indiana. Join us for the Divine Liturgy, fellowship lunch, and study afterwards.

Transformational life changes can occur through the recognition and application of the wisdom gleaned from the Book of Proverbs. King Solomon writes repeatedly in Proverbs that if people are mindful of their ways, they will gain knowledge and discretion.
As physical laws govern the universe, there are laws for living. Many people live by these laws without even knowing that they are following the principles of Proverbs; those who do not live by the laws of wisdom experience barriers and fail to feel fulfillment. King Solomon gives us powerful approaches and life-changing strategies to produce extraordinary results.

King Solomon was young when he was installed king of Israel in 974 B.C. before his father, King David, passed away. In the Book of 1 Kings 3:9 and Chronicles 1:10, God appeared to King Solomon and asked what he desired most as the new king. King Solomon replied that he only desired wisdom to rule the people. God told Solomon that since he did not request riches, he would give him wisdom and riches beyond any other king that ever lived.
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Proverbs 16:16
Proverbs 2:6…
”if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
