Hesychia House of Prayer is a mission of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica.

Four private hermitages for personal retreats are available, along with a chapel, walking trails, and a monastery overseen by Religious Sisters on 300 acres of land. Sister Lisa Atkins, RSM, Director

Hello from the brand new screened-in porch at Sacro Speco Hermitage. We are grateful to our Hesychia friends and donors who financially made this screened-in porch a reality. We are also very grateful to Mike DeSalvo for his craftsmanship and steadfastness in the heat of August to get this screened-in porch built and ready for cooler autumn weather. Brother Anthony Pierce, OSB was our first retreatant to enjoy this new screened in-porch.

What a sacred way to greet God and welcome a new day by soaking in the beauty of the Hesychia grounds and watching the cows. There is something in the cows chewing their cud rhytmically that slips us into a moment of contemplation with God. The Hesychia Sisters are very grateful to our families, benefactors and friends who donate their time and volunteer services, financial resources and other goods to the Hesychia Ministry. Your financial donations go directly into this ministry; for example, last week we had to purchase and install a new well pump that provides water for our cows and other needs.
We daily pray in gratitude for all who help us to sustain the ongoing ministry of Hesychia House of Prayer.

Today’s Gospel presents us with a question from Jesus, “Who do you say that I am ?”
Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ offers that the real focus is not on Jesus asking Peter, “Who do you say I am?”; rather, on HOW we answer it. Fr. Greg suggests we answer who Jesus is through “radical kinship”—by standing with people on the margins, choosing to respect and help others, and living out a fierce, unconditional love with our sleeves rolled up.

Fr. Tom Mullally, SVD has been coming to Hesychia for 39 years! Yesterday we were blessed to celebrate Fr. Tom’s 60th anniversary of profession of vows as a Divine Word Missionary.
We were delighted to have Fr. Jerome Kodell, OSB to concelebrate at Mass with Fr. Tom.
We thank God for Fr. Tom’s total “YES” to God and for his generous and servant heart. Today and everyday let us remember that we are all on God’s clock; every “YES” to God is a blessing to others!

With sadness we had to say goodbye to a few 200 + year old beautiful trees. We are grateful for all the gifts these trees have shared with us:
providing cool shade, showing off an array of beautiful leaves, providing homes for the birds and the critters, providing clean air and showing us how to age with grace.
As a parting gift Christ’s cross appears in the remaining stomp, signifying Christ has conquered death and is always with us!

Benedictine Sister, Sr. Joan Chittister, describes “a spaciousness of heart” as an inner expansion created from contemplation, openness and Benedictine wisdom.
St. Mark’s Hermitage may be a little smaller than the other hermitages; however, this hermitage offers the opportunity to experience the spaciousness of God, interiorly and exteriorly. It has an incredible view of the beautiful mountains, cows and sunrises.
