John 19:30
Christ's statement of "It is finished" carried a deeper meaning. This Greek word was used in a number of other places, most notably on records of debt or repayment. It meant that the debt was paid in full. Christ was announcing to the world that by His death, the debt of sin had been paid in full. Today is somber for us as Christians. We remember that Christ was indeed necessary and that it is only by His sacrifice which we remember today that we have any hope of salvation. It is a dark day because the perfect lamb, without spot or blemish, was slain for us. Brothers and sisters, on this day let us not forget that the joy of Sunday is born out of today's sorrow.
