CHRISTMAS MESSAGE IN ENGLISH & PORTUGUESE
MENSAGEM DE NATAL EM INGLÊS E PORTUGUÊS

Dear members and friends of First Baptist Church,

It’s Christmas time again! It’s one of the most special seasons of the year. The secular world has its own ways to celebrate the “holidays,” but for us Christians, though the celebration may include special decorations, social and family gatherings, presents, meals, it goes much further than that. It has a deep spiritual meaning (the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior to the world) and invites us to deepen our faith and commitment to Jesus, our Savior and Lord, who was born of Mary and placed in a manger in Bethlehem.

Jesus came as light for a world immersed in darkness. Each day now darkness becomes more intense. Evil is growing all around. Many people are calling light darkness, and darkness light, they call truth lie, and lie truth. Criminals are acquitted and innocents are condemned. Wars and natural calamities have just added to the suffering of millions. Honor, integrity, honesty, purity, patience, tolerance, forgiveness are very rare virtues nowadays. The opposition to the Christian faith is increasing even in the “Christian” west. But truth be said, the world needs the light of Christ now more than ever. Let’s remember that we, his servants, the believers, are “Christophores” in this world, we are the bearers of Christ, the bearers of His light. Let’s make His light shine in the middle of darkness as his faithful followers and witnesses. In this spirit, with gratitude, let’s celebrate Christmas.

And let’s not forget that Christmas is just the beginning of the story. Jesus grew up, taught about God and the Scriptures, performed miracles as signs of His coming Kingdom, died for our sins to redeem us, rose again from the dead, ascended to heaven, from where he will soon return to judge the world and establish his Kingdom of peace and justice.

At First Baptist Church of New Bedford we will celebrate two special worship services this yearend. On December 24, at 10:30 AM, we will celebrate the incarnation of God as Jesus of Nazareth, the Savior of the world. On December 31, 10:30 AM, we will hold our New Year’s Eve Worship Service. You are all invited to join us if you are in our area.

Prezados membros e amigos da Primeira Igreja Batista,

Estamos de novo no período de Natal! Esta é uma das épocas mais especiais do ano. O mundo secular tem suas próprias formas de celebrar as “festas”, mas para nós, cristãos, embora a celebração natalina possa incluir decorações especiais, reuniões sociais e familiares, presentes e refeições, ela abrange muito mais do que isso. Ela tem um profundo significado espiritual (o cumprimento da promessa de Deus de enviar um Salvador ao mundo) e nos convida a aprofundar a nossa fé e compromisso com Jesus, nosso Salvador e Senhor, que nasceu de Maria e foi colocado numa manjedoura em Belém.

Jesus veio como luz para um mundo imerso em trevas. A cada dia a escuridão se torna mais intensa. O mal está crescendo por toda a parte. Muitas pessoas chamam a luz de trevas, e as trevas de luz, chamam a verdade de mentira, e a mentira de verdade. Os criminosos são absolvidos e os inocentes condenados. As guerras e as calamidades naturais vêm para aumentar o sofrimento de milhões de pessoas. Honra, integridade, honestidade, pureza, paciência, tolerância, perdão são virtudes cada vez mais raras hoje em dia. A oposição à fé cristã está aumentando até mesmo no Ocidente “cristão”. Mas, verdade seja dita, o mundo precisa da luz de Cristo agora mais do que nunca. Lembremo-nos de que nós, os seus servos, os crentes, somos “cristóforos” neste mundo, somos portadores de Cristo, portadores de sua luz. Façamos brilhar essa luz em meio às trevas como seus seguidores e fiéis testemunhas. Nesse espírito, com gratidão, celebremos o Natal.

E não nos esqueçamos de que o Natal é apenas o começo da história. Jesus cresceu, ensinou sobre Deus e as Escrituras, realizou milagres como sinais do Reino vindouro, morreu pelos nossos pecados, para nos redimir, ressurgiu dos mortos e ascendeu aos céus, de onde voltará em breve para julgar o mundo e estabelecer o seu Reino de justiça e paz.

Celebraremos em nossa igreja dois cultos dominicais especiais neste fim de ano, às 10:30 AM. No dia 24 de dezembro, celebraremos o Natal, a incarnação de Deus em Jesus de Nazaré, o Salvador do mundo. No dia 31, celebraremos o culto de véspera do Ano Novo. Vocês são convidados a vir cultuar conosco se for possível.

Minha esposa e eu desejamos a vocês um feliz e abençoado Natal, e um Ano Novo alegre e cheio da paz de Cristo.

CHRISTIAN CONVERSIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST / CONVERSÕES CRISTÃS NO ORIENTE MÉDIO

At a time when the West is becoming pagan, the Christian faith is being opposed and ostracized by many, and a number of Christians are falling from the faith or trying to “reconstruct” their Christian beliefs based on human ideologies to please the enemies of the faith, it is refreshing to see how people of other regions and religions are gladly embracing the simple, Biblical faith in Jesus, the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life, thus quenching their spiritual thirst and finding salvation in the Son of God. Here is an impressive testimony found in the SAT-7 November 2022 Newsletter by Dr. Rex Rogers:

“Months before the Taliban took over, a call came to the SAT-7 television counseling center from a young man in Afghanistan. (SAT-7 is the largest Christian Satellite broadcasters for all the Middle East).

“The man told the telephone counselor that what he saw and heard on SAT-7 was disturbing. The Christians on his TV screen were not at all like he had been taught. They spoke their language, weren’t evil and deceiving, but loving. And they had a joy and peace about them that he found strangely attractive.

“Like so many around him, he didn’t have a clue who Jesus is. But somehow he knew there must be something better than the obligations of his beliefs and the terror practices he witnessed of radicals. He told the counselor that he was stunned and wanted to learn more. The SAT-7 counselor well remembered the call: ‘He was so impressed by Jesus that he wanted to know where He lived, so this man might meet Jesus!’ A few days later, he called again, this time with a friend. He, too, was deeply moved.

“A week later, another call came from the same phone number, from Afghanistan. This time there were 25 young men crammed into the same tiny apartment. The men were seeking Truth and hope… asking questions, listening to the counselor’s answers and most importantly, hearing the Truth of God for the first time in their lives!

“They described the apartment as being jammed with people. Some were even sitting in the bathroom, in the kitchen, or on one another’s laps! They each listened intently to the Gospel, the amazing news that God loved them, and that they could be forgiven of their sins. After the counselor answered all their questions, ALL 25 RECEIVED CHRIST, PRAYING OVER THE PHONE IN UNISON!

“Then a week later, they called again! Now there were 50—all influenced by SAT-7, listening to the counselor! How they all managed to fit in that confined apartment, I have no idea! But as before, the others who had joined them were questioning all they had been taught, profoundly moved by the person and character of Christ. This is the power of the Gospel, broadcast over satellite television to reach even the most difficult of places. A manager of SAT-7 said: ‘I believe there could be hundreds of groups just like them, meeting around their televisions, soaking in Truth they have never heard before. When people like these call in and become followers of Jesus, they say they are experiencing profound peace, they have been made new in Christ. They are anxious to meet other Christians, to start their own church and want to find a pastor. Because finding a local, trained pastor is often impossible, especially since the return of the Taliban, we assure them that we will not leave them alone and urge them to watch the many teaching programs on SAT-7.’

“Another young man contacted the same center, and shared: ‘I (and my four friends) want to surrender our lives to Jesus. You have helped us make a very difficult decision. Since we are in a country like Afghanistan, I want to stand firm in my faith. All I want from you is to know that you will not leave us alone. We have no one here but you and SAT-7.’”

Numa época em que o Ocidente está se tornando pagão, a fé cristã está sendo combatida e ostracizada por muitos, e vários cristãos estão caindo da fé ou tentando “reconstruir” suas crenças cristãs com base em ideologias humanas para agradar os inimigos da fé, é revigorante ver como pessoas de outras regiões e religiões estão abraçando com alegria a fé simples e bíblica em Jesus, aquele que é o Caminho, a Verdade e a Vida, saciando assim sua sede espiritual e encontrando a salvação no Filho de Deus. Aqui está um testemunho impressionante encontrado no boletim SAT-7 de novembro de 2022 pelo Dr. Rex Rogers:

O CRISTO RESSURRETO NO IRÃ

O mundo está em caos e trevas. Os inimigos de Deus e da igreja e de Israel estão encorajados. Mas o Cristo ressurreto continua ativo, comunicando vida sempre quando e em qualquer lugar que seu nome for invocado. Aqui está um lindo testemunho que nos vem do Irã. Ele foi extraído e traduzido de um artigo publicado há pouco tempo: “IRAN, more restriction, more growth” (Voice of the Martyrs Special Report).

Em meio a dificuldades e riscos crescentes, Deus está atraindo a si mesmo pessoas do Irã por meio da fé em Seu Filho, Jesus Cristo. Uma jovem senhora, chamada Mariam, exemplifica como Deus está salvando iranianos do pecado e do desespero.

Mariam estava numa necessidade desesperada de salvação. Ela estava comprometida com um homem violento, abusivo. Ela estava tão deprimida ao ponto de tomar 12 comprimidos por dia para poder aguentar a situação. Ela já havia tentado tirar a própria vida, sem sucesso, por cinco vezes, sentindo-se pior a cada vez, e pensando: “Não pude nem mesmo me matar!”.

Vendo que a overdose e os medicamentos não resolviam, Mariam decidiu enforcar-se. Ela pegou um pedaço de arame reforçado no meio do material elétrico de seu irmão, que era eletricista, e o escondeu em ser quarto. Então, numa tarde, ela trancou a porta e fez um laço no arame.

“Se você realmente existe”, disse ela a Deus enquanto se preparava para se enforcar, “eu quero tocar em você”. Em sua mente, ela esperava tocar em Deus depois de estar morta. Mariam engoliu todos os comprimidos que restavam, colocou o laço do arame ao redor do pescoço e deu um passo adiante, para fora da cama.

“Por quatro segundos eu clamei a Jesus, a Deus”, disse ela. “E de repente, da mesma forma como um bebezinho é segurado pelo pai sobre o ombro, eu senti que eu estava sobre o ombro de Jesus. Eu sempre desejei ser segurada assim por meu pai.

“Eu disse [a Jesus]: ‘Por favor, não me ponha no chão. Estou com medo de tocar o chão com meus pés’. Eu nem sentia vergonha, mesmo sendo este um homem que eu não conhecia. De alguma forma eu sabia que ele era Jesus, e ele citou o Salmo 91 para mim. É claro que eu nem sabia o que era o Salmo 91.

“Ele me disse: ‘Eu nem mesmo deixarei que o seu pé bata numa rocha, numa pedra; eu vou proteger você. Confie em mim’. A essa altura eu me despertei deitada em minha cama”.

Mariam levantou-se da cama, pensando se tudo aquilo não tinha passado de um sonho ou uma alucinação causada pelas dr**as. Mas quando ela olhou para baixo, ela viu sobre o piso o arame que estivera ao redor do seu pescoço; o laço estava desfeito. E quando ela olhou no espelho, ela viu um ferimento escuro ao redor do pescoço.

Mariam começou a chorar, entendendo que Jesus a amava e tinha salvado sua vida. Ela então estava ciente de que ela o seguiria aonde quer que fosse e faria qualquer coisa que ele lhe pedisse. Então suas lágrimas se tornaram em riso, ficando dominada pela alegria da salvação.

Sua família ficou chocada. Eles não tinham visto Mariam sorrir por muitos meses. Quando ela compartilhou sua estória de um Deus que a havia socorrido e a segurou de forma tão íntima, como um pai segura seu filho, outros em sua família, e mesmo outros no seu prédio de apartamentos, logo começaram a seguir a Jesus Cristo.

THE RISEN CHRIST IN IRAN

The world is in chaos and darkness. The enemies of God, and of the church, and of Israel are emboldened. But the risen Christ is still active imparting life whenever and wherever his name is called upon. Here is a beautiful testimony from Iran. It’s transcribed from an article printed a short time ago, “IRAN, more restrictions, more growth” (Voice of the Martyrs Special Report).

Amid increasing difficulties and risks, God is drawing people in Iran to Himself through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. A young woman named Mariam exemplifies how God is saving Iranians from sin and despair.

Mariam was in desperate need of salvation. She was engaged to a violent, abusive man and was so depressed that she took 12 pills a day just to keep going. She had tried unsuccessfully to take her own life five times, feeling worse each time, thinking, “I couldn’t even kill myself!”

When overdosing and medications didn’t work, Mariam decided to hang herself. She took a length of strong wire from some electrical supplies belonging to her brother, who was an electrician, and hid it in her room. Then, one afternoon she locked the door and twisted the wire into a noose.

“If you actually exist,” she told God as she prepared to hang herself, “I want to touch you.” In her mind, she expected to touch God after she was dead. Mariam swallowed all the pills she had left, wrapped the noose around her neck and stepped off her bed.

“For four seconds I called out to Jesus, to God,” she said. “And all of a sudden, just like a little baby is held over the shoulder of the father, I felt like I was over the shoulder of Jesus. I always desired to have been held like that by my father.

“I told [Jesus], ‘Please don’t put me down on the ground. I am scared to have my feet touch the ground.’ I wasn’t even embarrassed, even though this was a man I didn’t know. Somehow I knew that He was Jesus, and He recited Psalm 91 to me. Of course, I didn’t even know what Psalm 91 was.

“He told me, ‘I won’t even let your foot hit a rock, a stone; I am going to protect you. Trust Me.’ At this point I woke up lying on my bed.”

Mariam got off her bed, wondering if the whole thing had been a dream or drug-induced hallucination. But when she looked down, she saw the wire that had been around her neck lying on the floor; the noose had been undone. And when she looked in the mirror, she saw a dark bruise encircling her neck.

Mariam began to cry, understanding that Jesus loved her and had saved her life. She knew, then, that she would follow Him anywhere and do anything He asked of her. Then her tears turned to laughter, as she was overwhelmed with the joy of salvation.

Her family was in shock; they hadn’t even seen Mariam chuckle in many months. As she shared her story of a God who had rescued her and held her close, as a father holds his child, others in her family and even others in her apartment building soon began to follow Jesus Christ.

AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS

Porém Noé achou graça diante do Senhor.
Eis a história de Noé. Noé era homem justo e íntegro entre os seus contemporâneos; Noé andava com Deus (Gênesis 6:8-9).

Como é o nosso caso hoje, Noé viveu num tempo de caos mundial, de corrupção global; corrupção moral, espiritual e social. Mas ele não se deixou influenciar pelas trevas de seus dias. Resistiu ser arrastado pela maioria. Rejeitou sua forma corrupta de agir e pensar. Preferiu ser o “patinho feio” da história. Só ele estava “errado”. Todos os outros estavam “certos”. Mas na verdade, aos olhos de Deus, ele era um homem justo e íntegro.

Noé tinha um segredo: Ele andava com Deus. Isso lhe trouxe enorme vantagem (escapou do dilúvio) e fez dele um novo tipo de Adão da humanidade. Andar com Deus traz inúmeras bênçãos e é uma escola singular, onde aprendemos a ser como Ele é. Isso vai de acordo com o ditado popular, “Dize-me com quem andas e eu direi quem tu és”. E vai também de acordo com as palavras de Jesus: “Tomai sobre vós o meu jugo (ou andai humildemente agarrado a mim) e aprendei de mim...”(Mateus 11:29). O andar com Deus—que pode ser brevemente explicado como a consciência permanente da presença de Deus e uma interação submissiva e dinâmica com essa presença em diferentes formas—traz muitas consequências. Vamos agora mencionar apenas algumas delas:

1. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS cavalgam por cima das tempestades. Eles podem ter perdas, mas sobram para contar a história. Não morrem afogados no mar da vida, mas sobrevivem no barco de Deus. São remanescentes como Noé, Ló e os israelitas fiéis.

2. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS não submergem nas crises de identidade. Eles sabem que são o que Deus diz que eles são. Superam a auto-estima baixa e os complexos de inferioridade ou superioridade, e vencem o medo e a solidão.

3. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS não procuram promover a si mesmos e projetar sua própria imagem. Não usam o nome de Deus para manipular as pessoas ou fazer do serviço a Deus fonte de lucro pessoal. Não pretendem ser o que não são, mas sinceramente buscam e apontam para a glória de Deus somente.

4. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS acabam descobrindo suas próprias fraquezas e imperfeições (como Isaías). Mas aprendem a descansar na graça, no poder e suficiência de Deus.

5. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS aprendem a ver as pessoas, os fatos e o mundo da perspectiva de Deus. Só vêem o mal e o bem onde eles realmente existem e aprendem a não julgar. Não rejeitam o que é bom e não “batizam” o que é mau e errado.

6. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS aprendem a amar mais a Deus e ao próximo. Eles amam aos que os amam, aos que lhes são indiferentes, aos que lhes são hostis, e até aos seus inimigos.

7. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS valorizam e respeitam a todas as pessoas. Isso inclui as que são diferentes ou pensam de maneira diferente, e aquelas com quem discordam.

8. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS adquirem um espírito perdoador e compassivo. Eles permitem aos outros a vantagem da dúvida. Andam pacientemente a segunda milha. Não julgam, não condenam e dão aos outros uma segunda chance.

9. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS preocupam-se menos com a opinião pública do que com o que Deus tem a dizer sobre eles mesmos e o mundo em geral. Eles aprendem a agradar prioritariamente a Deus, e não aos homens. Contudo, ouvem humildemente às críticas, e põem-se a avaliá-las na presença der Deus.

10. AQUELES QUE ANDAM COM DEUS não se deixam seduzir pela corrupção moral e pela ideologias humanistas populares do seu tempo. Antes, demonstram integridade moral e espiritual e afirmam as verdades das Escrituras, particularmente dos ensinos de Cristo, e nelas se apóiam.

Vamos nos esforçar para andarmos mais pertos de Deus todos os dias e aceitarmos as consequências.

Advertência: Andar com Deus não é uma experiência livre de dor, mas envolve cura e conforto. Ela não evita que sejamos lançados numa cova de leões ou numa fornalha de fogo ardente. Mas Deus não nos abandona. Ele anda conosco principalmente dentro das covas e fornalhas.
