Something exciting is on the horizon at the Seamen's Bethel!

The New Bedford Port Society is excited that New Bedford's first public statue honoring Herman Melville will soon find its home at this historic site. Melville's visit to New Bedford and his experience at the Seamen's Bethel helped inspire Moby-Dick, creating a connection that continues to draw visitors from around the world more than 170 years later. As we look forward to welcoming this remarkable addition, we invite you to learn more about the project, follow its progress, and stay up to date on future announcements by visiting the link below.

The New Bedford Port Society extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lars Vinjerud II.

Lars was a respected leader in New Bedford’s fishing industry and business community. Through Fleet Fisheries, Fathoms, and numerous other ventures throughout New Bedford and Fairhaven, he helped shape the waterfront and downtown areas that are so vital to our region’s identity and economy.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lars was a generous supporter of many community organizations, including the New Bedford Port Society. His contributions during the restoration and renovation of the Seamen’s Bethel helped preserve an important piece of New Bedford’s maritime heritage for future generations.

His impact on the fishing industry, the local business community, and countless individuals will not be forgotten. We join many throughout the South Coast in mourning his loss and celebrating a life dedicated to hard work, leadership, and community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who knew and loved him during this difficult time

God Bless,

Phil Oliveira

More than 180 years ago, a familiar sight left New Bedford Harbor as the whaleship Charles W. Morgan began her second whaling voyage on June 10, 1845, under the command of Captain J.D. Samson. Built and launched in New Bedford in 1841, the Morgan was among the vessels that helped establish the city as the center of the American whaling industry. Over an 80-year career, she completed 37 whaling voyages and today remains the last surviving American whaleship and the last surviving wooden whaleship in the world.
For the crew preparing to leave New Bedford in 1845, the voyage ahead would likely span years rather than months. Those mariners were part of the very community that inspired the founding of the New Bedford Port Society and the construction of the Seamen's Bethel, where generations of sailors gathered before setting sail from one of the world's busiest whaling ports. As we remember the departure of the Charles W. Morgan, we also remember the thousands of whalemen, merchant mariners, and fishermen whose lives were connected to the sea and whose stories continue to be preserved by the New Bedford Port Society. In early June of 1850, the New Bedford whaleship Ann Alexander set sail on a voyage that would become one of the most famous in maritime history. More than a year later, while hunting s***m whales in the Pacific Ocean, the crew encountered a whale that fought back with extraordinary force. After destroying two whaleboats, the whale struck the ship itself, causing the crew to abandon the vessel. Thankfully, all aboard survived and were rescued by another New Bedford whaleship, the Nantucket. The incident became one of the most widely discussed events of the whaling era and remains a powerful reminder of the dangers faced by those who made their living at sea.
At the New Bedford Port Society, we are honored to preserve and share stories like that of the Ann Alexander, helping to keep alive the legacy of the mariners who sailed from New Bedford and ventured into waters around the world. Those wishing to learn more about the heroic and exciting stories of New Bedford's vessels can stop by today from 10am-4pm and visit our website at https://nbportsociety.org/

Happy Birthday to Sarah Rotch Arnold, a woman whose generosity and devotion to New Bedford’s maritime community became part of the lasting foundation of the New Bedford Port Society. Sarah Rotch Arnold served as the first president of the Ladies’ Branch of the New Bedford Port Society, helping organize charitable efforts for seamen and their families during the city’s whaling era. After the passing of her father, William Rotch Jr., she donated the former Rotch family home to the New Bedford Port Society. In 1851, the building opened as the Mariners’ Home beside the Seamen’s Bethel, welcoming mariners arriving in New Bedford with lodging and care.
The history of the New Bedford Port Society cannot be told without recognizing Sarah Rotch Arnold’s extraordinary kindness and generosity. Today, we celebrate her with gratitude for the legacy she helped create, one that continues to serve and preserve New Bedford’s maritime history. Anyone wishing to learn more about Sarah Rotch Arnold can stop by today from 10am-4pm and visit our website at https://nbportsociety.org/
