Mass Matters: Come, Give, and Encounter Jesus

The Mass is not simply about what we can get from going to church. It is first and foremost about what we give to God. God is the Lord of the Universe, our Creator, and the source of everything we have. At Mass, we have the beautiful opportunity to give Him what is rightfully His—our worship, our praise, our gratitude, our attention, and most importantly, ourselves.

The Mass reminds us that our faith is not something we simply attend or check off a list. It is a relationship with Jesus. When we gather as a family at Mass, we are teaching our children that God comes first and that worshiping Him is an essential part of who we are as Catholics.

This Sunday!

Several parishioners from our parishes had the unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience of attending the Beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen in St. Louis on September 24th. It was a beautiful day celebrating with the larger universal Church - over 50,000 people, close to 3,000 clergy + seminarians, and one newly Blessed.

Blessed Fulton Sheen is the first American-born bishop to be beatified. He was from Peoria, IL and is known as one of the first televangelist for his prime time show “Life is Worth Living” that aired in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was a missionary and director with the Society of the Propagation of the Faith serving in several different countries. He also authored 66 books during his life and kept a Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament everyday.

As Sr. Josephine Garrett said on Thursday, this title doesn’t mean anything to Fulton Sheen. This grand gesture is for us - the Church militant still striving for heaven. People like Bl. Fulton Sheen and his recognition as a Blessed in the Church, remind us that we are also running the race toward sanctity. He is an example of how we can live our lives for the Lord by serving and loving others well; standing up for truth even when it’s difficult or unpopular; and loving Jesus, above all else. Sainthood is for everyone, even a hometown boy from the Midwest and for each one of us!

If you have other photos to share, put them in the comments below!

Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us!

“Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?” Bl. Fulton Sheen
