Pursue the One Who Matters
As Christians, we find ourselves referencing the loving and merciful God we serve rather than the God of wrath and anger. For obvious reasons, we choose the first over the last. If we want to have a personal relationship with Him, we must pursue the one true God who loves and forgives us.
Evangelist J.I. Packer states, “One of the most striking things about the Bible is the vigor with which both testaments emphasize the reality and terror of God’s wrath.”
In Romans 1, the Apostle Paul goes to great lengths to communicate that God’s righteousness is available to all who believe. It was his mission to help others understand the need to commit their lives to Jesus, to have His presence in their lives, to spread the gospel far and wide, and to share the blueprint to salvation. Paul spent an inordinate amount of time helping people understand their predicament. When people sin and reject Jesus, God’s response is with wrath and anger.
In Mark 2:17, “Jesus said to the Pharisees, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’”
Daily Thought
"Train yourself to find the blessing in everything."

In Romans 1:18-23 the focus is on one of the most difficult topics for believers and unbelievers alike -- the wrath of God. It’s easier for us to talk about a loving God and gloss over the anger He feels when we separate from Him. But diving deep in the word is where we discover that the cross is where His love, mercy, grace, anger, wrath, and justice come together. In these verses the Apostle Paul goes to great lengths to communicate that God’s righteousness is available to all who believe. It was his mission to help others understand the need to commit their lives to Jesus, to have His presence in their lives, to spread the gospel far and wide, and to share the blueprint to salvation. Romans 1:21 "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened."

Gratitude begins where my sense of entitlement ends.

A promise is valuable only if the one making it has trustworthy character and the ability to carry through. Our heavenly Father is truthful, faithful, loving, and all-powerful. We can base our entire life on His promises, secure in the knowledge that He will do just as He has said.

Be Bold and Share the Good News
Do we share Paul’s boldness to spread the good news? Or, do we stay silent because we don’t want to rock the boat or offend anyone? We live in a world right now where people are offended over anything and everything. Will the fear of stepping forward and sharing God’s Word stop us from doing what Paul did? Will we miss the opportunity to share the most important news in the history of mankind?
We should never be ashamed of sharing the gospel, for it is the power of God for everyone who believes. Paul tells us “the righteous will live by faith.” It is our faith in Christ that sustains us.

Sharing Our Faith

Paul’s visit to Rome was a priority and it came to fruition. While he was there he shared his faith, fellowshipped, created new friendships and helped bring comfort to those experiencing hardship. In return, he received the same blessings. His main mission was to share the gospel. He could share first hand his life experiences prior to accepting Christ and then about his journey with Christ on the road to Damascus which changed his life forever.
From that point on Paul was consumed with spreading the gospel and he felt obligated to take the Word to the entire world. Spreading the message of the gospel of Christ proved to have life-changing power and it was for every single person.

Pray Consistently
Prayer kept Paul going. It was a part of who he was. Even though he didn’t know them he prayed for these people consistently and for the opportunity to see them soon. Just as Christ answers our prayers, sometimes in a different way than we expected, Paul never dreamed he would visit Rome as a prisoner. But he did. He continually prayed for safe arrival in Rome; and he did, after getting arrested, slapped in the face, shipwrecked, and surviving a snake bite. Sounds like a pretty challenging ordeal doesn’t it? None of what he went through was easy but he had faith.
We may feel the same way from time to time. When mishaps and circumstances affect our lives in unexpected ways, it is our faith in Christ that sustains us.

Paul’s mission in Romans 1 was to encourage the church to seek Christ and live the Christian life. His letter shows his love for the people, even though he had not met them yet. His desire was to share the gospel and show the Romans what a new life through faith would look like. He wanted them to see that it is our faith in Christ that sustains us.
Paul thanks his "God through Jesus Christ for all of you"–meaning that Christ is the only mediator between God and humans. He goes on to say that their "faith is being reported all over the world." That is because their faith was strong. Can we say the same? When people talk to us or visit our churches do they see Christ in us, at the center of our worship, and in our actions? Do others see our faith lived out when we experience devastating or difficult situations? We can pray that we seek Him at every turn so others see Christ in us and through our actions.

The Apostle Paul lived for Jesus, didn't he? Even though the Romans were strangers he wrote and encouraged them to give their lives to Christ. He lived boldly for Christ, even in the midst of his challenges and setbacks. Though his trip to Rome was filled with difficulties and delays, he made it. He wanted to show what a life of faith meant. I pray we can be so bold--to deliver the most important message that mankind will ever hear.

Romans 1:11-17 NIV
11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,[a] that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[b] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

Romans 1:1-7
New International Version
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a] was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[c] faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
In Romans 1:1-7 Paul did the following:

Presented the facts of the gospel
Declared his allegiance to Christ
Expressed heavy concern for those who were lost and communicated how much they needed God’s attention and intervention.

As you read these verses think about your commitment to Christ. Are you a servant of Christ? Are you a messenger, an encourager, are you set apart? Jesus paid the price for our sins and purchased us to be a part of His family. Are we the bright light that is so needed in this very dark world?

Be Deeply Committed

As Christians we claim that we are followers of Christ; that we are deeply committed to living like Him. Let’s think about that in the context of what it really means. Are we:

Serving and obeying Christ like Paul did, even in challenging times?
Using God’s generous gift of life (to us) to further His kingdom?
Passionately sharing about Jesus so others see our faith and trust in Him.
Vocal enough to share our strength and courage about living a Christian life?
