"I ask for no favor for my s*x. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks." Sarah Moore Grimké

Today's the birthday of early abolitionist and feminist Sarah Moore Grimké (November 26, 1792 – December 23, 1873).

Born and reared in South Carolina to a prominent, wealthy planter family, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the 1820s to became a Quaker. Ten years later she returned to South Carolina to "save" her younger sister Angelina from the limitations of the South.

The two sisters devoted themselves to charity work, and began to speak on the lecture circuit, recounting their knowledge of slavery firsthand and advocating for full abolition, as well as the need for economic independence for women and the importance of women's rights.

Sarah Moore Grimké was the author of the first developed public argument for women's equality, and her writings inspired orher feminists such as Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucretia Mott.

She was one of our Women's History Honorees in 1992: https://nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org/biographies/
