Sermon for Sabbath June 13
A poor widow walks quietly into the temple. The wealthy are giving large offerings publicly. She places two tiny copper coins into the treasury. Jesus notices her. From that moment forward, generations of Christians have been taught: “Be like the widow.” Give more. Sacrifice more. Hold nothing back from God.
What if this story is not primarily a celebration? What if it is a tragedy? What if Jesus is not admiring a healthy religious system… but exposing a broken one?
