Good Friday Tenebrae Service, April 18, 4 to 5 pm at Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church
A Service of Tenebrae, or "Shadows," is based on a twelfth–century service. It is a lovely extended meditation on the passion of Christ. Through music, scripture, candles and silence we’ll follow Christ to the cross in preparation for Sunday.

The lectionary text from yesterday (Luke 4:1-13) talked about the start of Jesus’ ministry on earth, and how he began it with forty days of fasting, meditation, prayer and temptation in the wilderness. Our Prayer Primer prayer today was written by Chris Heckert, and originally posted on his website, Heckert Resources. If you feel like you’re wandering in your own wilderness, try this prayer:
God,
You know our hearts. You have knitted our inmost being and you know our deepest desires, fears and worries. Help us to journey during this Lenten season into a new awareness of your presence in our lives. Save us from our own temptations, so that we may more freely follow you.
Amen.

Prayer is our way of reaching out for God’s presence, comfort, guidance, healing, help, and companionship in our lives. Throughout Lent, those weeks to prepare our hearts and minds for Easter, Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church will post a Prayer Primer on its website every Monday. This is, in particular, for those who are uncomfortable or don’t know how to pray (though there isn’t a “right” way!) It will include different ways to pray as we journey through Lent.
Today, on Ash Wednesday, we share a brief prayer written by Father William J. O’Malley in his book, Lenten Prayers for Busy People. This prayer is a prayer for change and growth during Lent:
Great friend,
I’m not yet up to the total make-over.
Help me to proceed, as Italians say,
lentamente, slowly

This coming Sunday, February 25, at 11 am, join us for worship as we welcome a very special musician to share with us. Lasana Kanneh was born in Liberia where he used to sing for food on war-torn streets. Born blind, he was ostracized from his community but his musical talent was recognized early. As he grew, he created a totally unique and original style that cannot be contained in any one genre. Soaring vocals, simple melodies and killer arrangements create this special music.
Lasana escaped war, persecution, poverty, abuse and personal failure to bring you these beautiful songs of faith, hope, and restoration. We hope you’ll join us in person or online to hear him this Sunday at 11 am. The online link is https://greaternw.zoom.us/j/98088503212

Poetry, perhaps because words must be so carefully chosen, they can speak for the heart more directly than prose. We’ll look at the poem for the week, and then write our own, exploring haiku, haibun, and photo haiga and their intersection with our scripture for the week.
