The tornado didn’t just cause physical damage. It also wounded our psyche, our inner being. The plethora of emotions we experience is overwhelming. Connect and find support with others who understand how difficult this is.

Based on continuing interest and need, NAMI Fox Valley has extended our weekly peer support group for adults navigating the emotional impact of the recent tornado and its aftermath. Group meetings are now scheduled through September 23.

After a disaster, it can be easy to let the emotional impact of the trauma take a back seat as one navigates immediate needs. At the same time, taking care of one's mental health in a time of crisis is critically important.

This is an opportunity for those affected by the storm to come together, share experiences, connect with others who understand, and find support.

There is no charge to attend this group and no registration is required. Simply come join us at the Elisha D. Smith Public Library in Menasha on any of the following dates and times in September:

🔹Wednesday, September 2, 6:00-7:30 PM
🔹Wednesday, September 9, 6:00-7:30 PM
🔹Wednesday, September 16, 6:00-7:30 PM
🔹Wednesday, September 23, 6:00-7:30 PM

If you have questions, please reach out to Vicki Rivera at [email protected] or 920-740-4565.

God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the world. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands.

Winnebago County Emergency Management has the following message:

REMINDER: Winnebago County will RESUME outdoor warning siren testing TOMORROW, August 29, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.

Testing the sirens is an important part of emergency preparedness.
🔧 It allows for efficient maintenance
🔊 It verifies acoustic coverage
📢 It familiarizes residents with the emergency siren sound
⌛ It ensures timely response to seek shelter in times of real emergency events

Check on your family and friends, who were impacted by the July 27 severe weather, to see if they would like extra support during the testing.

After the severe weather that occurred on July 27, some residents may experience emotional distress during the weekly siren testing. Winnebago County Crisis Center has a 24 hour, 7 days a week hotline. If you are in need of immediate support for mental health and/or an emotional emergency, call: 920-233-7707.

Additionally, residents have several mental health resources available through the Winnebago County Multi-Agency Resource Center. Please visit the following link to find assistance: https://www.winnebagocountywi.gov/997/Mental-Health-Support.

For the past couple of weeks on Wednesday evenings, Samaritan has teamed up with Celebration Church Fox Valley to provide walk-in crisis support for anyone in need.

Next week, on September 2nd from 6:00pm-8:00pm we will continue providing individual crisis support but will also offer a support group option. This is a great opportunity for those that may feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with others who have faced similar hardship.

At 6:00pm Samaritan counselors will offer a brief presentation, "Making Sense of the Aftermath", to share strategies and resources to help navigate challenges following the tornado destruction.

For questions, please contact Samaritan staff at 920-886-9319 or [email protected]

Gov. Tony Evers has sent a request to the President for a federal disaster declaration following the July 27 tornado.

So, what does that mean?

The request is an important step in the federal disaster assistance process. It now goes through FEMA to the President for a decision on whether a federal disaster declaration will be approved and what types of assistance may be made available.

A request does not mean FEMA funding has been approved. There is also no guaranteed timeline for a decision. The federal disaster declaration process can take several weeks or longer.

If a declaration is approved, we will share information about what assistance is available, who may be eligible and how to apply.

In the meantime, local recovery work continues. We’ll keep sharing updates as we learn more.
