It was sure to be an interesting night on Wednesday, August 27, when Navy man turned attorney turned pastor Trip Torbert arrived to speak.
Accompanied by his wife, Louise, and a number of members of his congregation from Mt. Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Penn Hills, Rev. Torbert (better known as “Trip”) opened with a story about his boat outing with a buddy for a much-anticipated day of fishing. Far out into the water, their motor died, resulting in a story that could have easily been made into a full-length movie. As the clouds rolled in and the sun began to set over the two stranded at sea, we all had visions of the scene that drew us to the edges of our pews.
Understanding that a good story was how Jesus often shared messages, Trip wove a tale that had us all believing in God’s miracles, as a chance sighting of a lone island house resulted in a young woman starting up her boat and towing them to safety.
As further proof that angels are among us, when our service opened in the unexpected absence of our pianist (resulting in our opening songs being belted out in various keys and the anticipation that our closing hymn, Amazing Grace, would be sung similarly), cottage owner Cheryl Vought quietly approached the piano and, to everyone’s surprise, played the perfect accompaniment to this perfect closing hymn. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound . . .
