The last campfire of the season brought the cottage community together to say good bye before many headed south for the winter. Others returned to their nearby homes and will miss the friendships and serenity of their summer retreat.

If you’ve thought of going south for the winter to escape the cold, owning a cottage here is a great solution to returning to family in the Pittsburgh area for the summer. The campground reopens April 1, and there are currently three cottages available for purchase. Feel free to contact Sales Chairman Kathy Kuny at 724-272-1947 to learn more.

Candlelight filled the tabernacle as we closed out the 176th season singing “God be with you till we meet again . . .”

Pastor Jonathan Fehl of Cabot Church led the August 31st annual communion service followed by the lighting of candles and prayers that God hold us in His hands until we gather together again.

Abundant joy filled the historic grounds on Sunday, September 7, when Tarentum’s Abundant Joy Fellowship held their annual service and picnic.

Pastor Cathy Blythe opened the day with a lively message that drew attendees onto the lawn for a game that required participants to work together. The fun continued with fabulous food, fellowship, and an abundance of activities that kept smiles on faces all day long.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” - Psalm 118:24

THE ANNUAL LADIES’ TEA

The ladies of the cottage community stepped back in time at the annual ladies tea.

Many of them wearing hats they had created just days earlier in preparation for the much-anticipated event, they enjoyed sipping tea, nibbling on scones and a variety of tea-worthy treats, and chatting outdoors on Mary Lou Bender’s beautiful cottage porch. Musical entertainment was provided by Carol and Michael, who showed up in his own home-made hat and was a big hit as the only man among the ladies.

What’s a woman to do when she has “nothing to wear” and it’s just days before the tea party? She makes a fascinator, that’s what she does!

The classy ladies of the Pittsburgh Tarentum Campmeeting Association prepared for the annual ladies’ tea by making their own fascinators. Under the guidance of the talented Cheryl Vought, they carefully crafted sparkling headwear that complemented their lovely dresses.

The cottage kitchens knew just what to prepare to go with hot dogs around an ol’ time campfire for a Labor Day celebration. Family and friends from near and far joined the members of the cottage community in pulling up chairs around the firepit for an evening of singing, food, and fun.

Join us on Labor Day for an ol’ time campfire and sing along! After weeks of repairs, our fire pit is ready for us to surround it with our chairs and sticks adorned with marshmallows.

The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 1. Hot dogs and everything needed to make S’mores will be provided. Feel free to bring something yummy to share, your own nonalcoholic beverage, and a chair (picnic benches and a limited number of chairs are available). As the song says “It only takes a spark to get a fire going. And soon all those around will warm up in its glowing . . .”

It was sure to be an interesting night on Wednesday, August 27, when Navy man turned attorney turned pastor Trip Torbert arrived to speak.

Accompanied by his wife, Louise, and a number of members of his congregation from Mt. Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Penn Hills, Rev. Torbert (better known as “Trip”) opened with a story about his boat outing with a buddy for a much-anticipated day of fishing. Far out into the water, their motor died, resulting in a story that could have easily been made into a full-length movie. As the clouds rolled in and the sun began to set over the two stranded at sea, we all had visions of the scene that drew us to the edges of our pews.

Understanding that a good story was how Jesus often shared messages, Trip wove a tale that had us all believing in God’s miracles, as a chance sighting of a lone island house resulted in a young woman starting up her boat and towing them to safety.

As further proof that angels are among us, when our service opened in the unexpected absence of our pianist (resulting in our opening songs being belted out in various keys and the anticipation that our closing hymn, Amazing Grace, would be sung similarly), cottage owner Cheryl Vought quietly approached the piano and, to everyone’s surprise, played the perfect accompaniment to this perfect closing hymn. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound . . .
