The Basilica of Saint Mary

The Basilica of Saint Mary Welcome to St. Mary Basilica
Recognized as an architectural masterpiece among Catholic churches in the south, it is the spiritual home of a vibrant St. The St.

Mary Catholic community today. The construction of this place of worship was begun in 1842 as the Cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Natchez. Mary congregation takes pride in the basilica's colorful and prayerful setting, and welcomes visitors from near and distant places. The city of Natchez, on the Mississippi River and the birthplace of Mississippi, is a tourist destination because of its historic antebellum homes. St. Mary Basilica, also antebellum, is the city's central landmark.

When Bishop Kopacz visited St. Mary’s in the Spring for Confirmation, he showed Fr. Aaron where his travel crozier was having a hard time staying together. The screws had been stripped from years of use.

This morning, at the Mass of the Holy Spirit for Cathedral Catholic School, Fr. Aaron presented Bishop Kopacz with a new travel crozier as a gift on behalf of the parishioners of Saint Mary Basilica and Assumption. The crozier was made for Bishop Kopacz by a woodworker in Ukraine and was designed to be wooden and collapsable like his current travel crozier.

Bishop Kopacz showed the crozier to the students during school Mass this morning, explaining its significance. In his homily he spoke about what it means to labor for the kingdom of God, using the image of a craftsman carving the crozier.

We are glad that as Bishop Kopacz prepares for his 76th birthday, he can travel with a reminder of the prayers and support of the Catholic community in Natchez.

There are several weekends available in September and October where we still need families to offer flowers for Mass. Flowers may be given in honor or anniversaries, birthdays or other occasions or in memory of a loved one. The dedication of the flowers each weekend is printed in the bulletin.

To reserve a weekend, please contact the office and then select the florist of your choice to provide the arrangements.

After hearing from my doctors, I have temporarily moved out of the Rectory until the Rectory can be restored and the mold removed. I will be living at a nearby house for the next several months. I wanted to thank everyone who assisted me with the move yesterday.

The house is furnished and clean, however some of the appliances in the kitchen are a bit dated for my purposes. I wanted to post these pictures to see if any parishioners had appliances they are looking to get rid of that they would be interested in donating to the Church. I’d like to eventually replace the range, dishwasher, and refrigerator.

Thank you.
- Fr. Aaron
