Just in time for Corpus Christi, our beautifully repaired and restored Monstrance has returned. Thanks to the generous donations of many benefactors, we are now able to restore and re-plate many of our sacred vessels, which have become very shabby after many decades of benign neglect. In the Catholic Church, the sacred vessels—such as the chalice, paten, ciborium, and monstrance—are held in the highest reverence because they come into direct contact with the Most Holy Eucharist.

"The holy vessels are not mere ornaments; they are the throne of Christ."— St. John Chrysostom

The extinguishing of the paschal candle after the Gospel dramatically symbolizes the end of Our Lord’s earthly ministry and the beginning of his High Priestly intercession at the right hand of His Father in Heaven.

This past weekend was a busy one at Church of the Assumption. On Saturday the Children of Mary had a corporate Communion. During Mass many of the girls received stars as part of the “The Crown of Twelve Stars Program”. The Children of Mary are a confraternity with roots dating back to the 1830s and connected with St. Catherine Labouré. It is now a worldwide confraternity for children between the ages of 7 and 18 who wish to consecrate themselves in a special way to Our Blessed Mother.

Then, on Sunday, the children of the parish led our annual May Crowning. Each year the children make a garland of roses to place on the statue of the Assumption near the rectory on 7th Avenue. This statue was erected and blessed by Bishop Adrian to commemorate the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption in 1950.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Invention or Finding of the True Cross. Unlike the September Feast, which commemorates the recapture of the relic of the Holy Cross in AD 628 from the Persians, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, today’s feast remembers St Helena’s discovery of the True Cross in AD 326.

One of our treasures at Assumption is a chasuble with a late 15th century embroidered Crucifix. This style of Embroidery is called ‘Opus Anglicanum’ or ‘English Work’. It’s a beautiful reminder that our Catholic Faith spans the centuries.
