IN HER 2008 MEMOIR THE LEGS ARE THE LAST TO GO, Diahann Carroll wrote about the nine-year affair she had with Sidney Poitier.

It started in 1959 on the set of Porgy and Bess. She was married to producer Monte Kay. He was married to Juanita Hardy and had four daughters. They agreed they would both leave. She divorced Kay in 1963. He stayed.

Carroll wrote that he bought a ring and a ten-room apartment on Riverside Drive, then told her his wife was having second thoughts and that he did not want her daughter living there. "He changed the locks so I couldn't get in," she wrote. "Then he made me write him a check to offset his purchase and decorating costs. I did as I was told, submissive and desperate."

He divorced Hardy in 1965 and married Joanna Shimkus in 1976. The affair ended in 1968. Decades later the two became friends.
