Seeking to open our hearts to the mystery of trust and hope in the Sacred,

Taizé embodies a spirit of simplicity. Prayer services consist of simple, repeated melodies, often drawn from the Scriptures, times of silence, and simple Scripture readings. Silence is essential as a way of opening our hearts to that which is beyond words and thought-- to an encounter with God. In the spirit of ecumenism, Taizé seeks to be an agent of reconciliation and peace in today's world.

The third Sunday of April comes rather early this year. It is this coming Sunday, April 16, so we will be having our monthly Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing at 5 PM in the sanctuary at West End UMC, 2200 West End Ave., Nashville, Tennessee.
Come for prayer that is sung, spoken, and silent in an atmosphere to English Gothic architecture and candlelit beauty. We offer an opportunity for those who wish it to come forward to be prayed for and anointed with oil You may pray for yourself, others, or a situation. Since our world is full of traumatic events, there is plenty of opportunity for you to offer yourself in prayer for the peace of the world. As it is still the Easter season, we will be reading the story of meeting Jesus on the road to Emmaus on Easter afternoon. May we all meet Jesus on our paths. This is one opportunity to do so. We hope to see you then!

This coming Sunday, March 19, 2023, the Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing will be held at 5 PM in the 4th Story Theater at West End UMC, Nashville. There you will be offered a time to walk the canvas labyrinth that is a model of the one in the floor of Chartres Cathedral.

Walking in a sacred space with heart and mind attuned to God is a form of prayer. The labyrinth has only one path, but it turns frequently. This is symbolic of how there are many changes in one lifetime. As Fr. Richard Rohr puts it, "A straight line trajectory grows no one; it only makes you more and more rigid and inflexible."

We invite you to participate as you are able. If you cannot walk the labyrinth with your feet, you can trace it with your fingers in the outline on the cover of the bulletin. If you cannot come in person, we invite you to watch us online: www.westendumc.org/media

The third Sunday of the month is this coming Sunday, March 19. We will have our usual monthly Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing at 5 PM except that it will be in the 4th Story Theater around the labyrinth.

Walking in a sacred space with a heart and mind attuned to God can be a wonderful form of prayer. During this Lenten season, we offer an opportunity for you to experience this by walking a canvas model of the labyrinth on the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. There is only one path, and its frequent turns remind us that we must change direction, change our life many times during one lifetime. As Father Richard Rohr puts it, "A straight-line trajectory grows no one; it only makes you more and more rigid and inflexible."

So plan to join us this Sunday at 5 in the 4th Story Theater to experience the prayer that is silent, sung, spoken, and walked. If you are not able to walk the labyrinth, you can trace its path on the bulletin cover or onscreen. If in-person attendance is not an option for you, streaming is available at www.westendumc.org/media

Because our December Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing is on the last day of the month, the third Sunday of January can come really fast! Believe it or not, this coming Sunday, January 15, is the third Sunday and time for our next service. We will return to the sanctuary for this contemplative worship time of prayer that is spoken, sung, and silent in the beauty of our English Gothic architecture. Our church is 150 years old this year, and this particular sanctuary dates from the late 1930's. We hope you will put 5 PM on January 15 on your calendar and plan to be present or to tune in online: westendumc.org/media

Once again we are approaching the third Sunday of the month, November 20, which means that West End UMC is holding its monthly Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing. We will meet in person at the sanctuary or on livestream at www.westendumc.org/media. The service begins at 5 PM.

If you've never been to a contemplative service n the style of Taizé, France, and if you want to connect deeply with the Divine Spirit in which we live, move and have our being, then this type of service might suit you very well. There is no sermon or belief system required. It is prayer that is silent, sung, and spoken in order to quiet the mined, open the heart, and feed the spirit. IT occurs in an atmosphere of quiet beauty. The music is chant-like so that it quiets the mind. The words read and spoken come from deep within, and so they open the heart. And all that helps us become aware of what is deep within us as well as all around us: the presence of the living God.

On behalf of the Taié Team, I invite you to come and bring a friend or two. Hope to see you there. . .

Once again it is time for the Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing at West End UMC, this coming Sunday, October 16, at 5 PM in the sanctuary or online at www.westendumc.org/media.

One of the most powerful aspects of this contemplative service is the unique type of chant that originated in the Taizé Community in France. Unlike hymns or other songs often sung in church services, the Taizé chants use only a few words repeated over and over again to a simple melody. This quiets the mind so that the heart may open and the soul be fed.

Here is what Sr. Joan Chittister has to say about the function of chant:

"The chanting had done what chanting is meant to do. It raises the mind and heart to God. It elevates consciousness beyond the prosaic and the earthly. It separates us from one kind of world and introduces us to another: the one that probes the soul rather than the mind. The one that settles us into the direction of our lives. The one that shapes our souls and trains the ears of our hearts to hear the spirit of life within us. The one that turns our feet from the path of the popular to the path of human purpose."

Cpme sing and pray with us! Dress is casual. Bring a friend or two. We all need this time of quiet and peace in the Holy Presence.

The Taizé Service of Prayer and Healing is coming up this Sunday, September 18, at 5 PM. It will be available in person and on livestream at westendumc.org/media.
If you can, we hope you will join us in person. While remote viewing can be powerful, being together with other lovers of this contemplative service has an added dimension that is difficult to quantify. Yet those present feel it.

This service is prayer that is silent, sung, and spoken in an atmosphere of quiet Gothic architectural beauty. There will be an opportunity for those who wish to come forward for individual healing prayer with anointing. We hope to see you there!—Sally Ahner and the Taizé Team
