This past weekend was a historic one for the Nashville Family of Brothers and for one brother in particular.
As of Saturday, September 30th, Pieter L Valk became the first brother to make lifetime commitments to the Nashville Family of Brothers! More specifically, he committed to a lifetime of vocational singleness, simplicity in his finances, to love and serve NFOB as his family and to obey NFOB’s Community Covenant.
It was a full weekend starting with a rehearsal dinner hosted by Pieter’s parents on Friday evening. Everyone enjoyed a great meal and got the chance to share toasts about Pieter and his impact on their lives. One of the most special moments of the evening was Pieter and his mother getting to share a mother/son dance.
After dinner, the NFOB house hosted a party with a bonfire, gourmet s’mores, drinks and more with anyone who was in town for the weekend festivities. It was a relaxed time of great fellowship with friends from near and far.
On Saturday morning, the NFOB house hosted our monthly Prayer and Praise gathering. It was open to anyone who happened to be in town for Pieter’s ceremony and around 30 people came over! Filled with pastries and coffee, we prayed, read Scripture and sang a few of Pieter’s favorite worship songs. This was a wonderful way to anchor ourselves in the Lord in preparation for the ceremony.
By Saturday afternoon, it was time for the ceremony. It was a beautiful event with powerful liturgy and worship. Members of NFOB’s Pastoral Advisory Board led the ceremony and one of the emphases that stood out was why this type of ceremony is necessary and why it is such a big deal.
This is a big deal because, like a marriage commitment, the commitments Pieter made are permanent. Also, as Pieter committed to a lifetime of vocational singleness as Jesus talked about in Matthew 19 and Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians 7, he trusts that God will grant him the fuller grace to live out that commitment. That is a big deal as well!
Finally, after the ceremony, everyone got to celebrate Pieter and his commitments at the reception. Delicious food, drinks and delectable cake were had by all and the evening ended with a few toasts and a group singing of the Doxology accented with sparklers.
It was a beautiful weekend and one that none of us will soon forget. God is continuing to knit our family together and we are all grateful.
Congratulations Pieter!!
