The Nashville Family of Brothers Building family in Nashville for men called to kingdom singleness

09/26/2025

UPDATE: Over the past six months we've felt the Lord inviting the Nashville Family of Brothers to pivot to a different kind of intentional Christian community that is dispersed throughout Nashville (as opposed to limited to one house), open to single Christian women and men of all kinds (as opposed to only men called to lifetime celibacy), and involves short-term commitments (as opposed to pushing toward lifetime community commitments).

While we're excited about the opportunity to offer community to more people, it also involves giving up part of our hopes for lifetime committed family.

We plan to privately process this bittersweet change while we take early steps toward this new expression of intentional Christian community.

In the meantime, if you've been following our journey over the past seven years, you're welcome to pray for us and for what comes next.

Moreover, we want to say thank you to all of the friends and extended family who helped us along the way. We're grateful for the companionship this family offered us for a season, and we're hopeful about what's to come.

One Month until NFOB Exploration Starts

If you’re interested in exploring from a distance whether moving into the Nashville Family of Brothers is the next right step for you, contact us to join our next eight-month Exploration Process starting October 7th, 2024.

Over those eight months you’ll learn about NFOB, read and study texts to help you in your exploration process, connect with fellow Explorers, and go on a retreat with current NFOB brothers.

Email us at [email protected] or fill out the GoogleForm at the link in comments to claim your spot in NFOB’s next Exploration Process (or ask questions).

Please note: the Exploration Process is a time for both Explorers and current Brothers to discover whether it’s the next right step for an individual to move in.

NFOB is currently in an intentional season of learning, growing, and seeking long-term health. As such, current Brothers may determine at the end of the Exploration Process that it is not yet time for any new individuals to move into NFOB.

Last year when Kevin moved in, we were devastated to learn that he had never watched The Prince of Egypt.

So we rounded out this Thanksgiving together by finally watching the movie.

Happy holidays from our family to yours :)

Would you join us in praying for those discerning with the Nashville Family of Brothers over the next year?

On October 28th, four brothers made commitments to NFOB! The ceremony was hosted at Church of the Redeemer, the home church of Jim and Pieter. Each committing brother got to share why they chose to make commitments and then shared what they were committing to. The commitments made by each brother included learning how to faithfully use their singleness for the kingdom, seeing and loving the other brothers of NFOB as family, living according to NFOB’s Community Covenant and more.

Jim and James made three year commitments at the ceremony. Brothers who make three year commitments are seeking confirmation that they are indeed called to family with NFOB and to invest more deeply in our community.

Kevin and Curtis made one year commitments at the ceremony. Brothers who make one year commitments are discerning whether God is calling them to vocational singleness and family with NFOB.

We are excited to see where God leads these men in their discernment! Your prayers for these brothers over the next year would be greatly appreciated!

NFOB’s 2023 Commitment Ceremony will be live-streamed here on Facebook starting at 5pm CT!

So, what are the weekly Exploration meetings?

If you join this year’s Exploration cohort, we’ll gather virtually each Monday at 7:30 pm CT for an hour to build friendship with each other, pray together, and learn about the Nashville Family of Brothers.

We’ll discuss topics including family, kingdom work, vocational singleness, and discernment.

Armed with a deeper understanding of NFOB, opportunities for in-person fellowship with fellow explorers and current brothers, and the prayer of friends and family, we hope you gain confidence about your next best step!

This past weekend was a historic one for the Nashville Family of Brothers and for one brother in particular.

As of Saturday, September 30th, Pieter L Valk became the first brother to make lifetime commitments to the Nashville Family of Brothers! More specifically, he committed to a lifetime of vocational singleness, simplicity in his finances, to love and serve NFOB as his family and to obey NFOB’s Community Covenant.

It was a full weekend starting with a rehearsal dinner hosted by Pieter’s parents on Friday evening. Everyone enjoyed a great meal and got the chance to share toasts about Pieter and his impact on their lives. One of the most special moments of the evening was Pieter and his mother getting to share a mother/son dance.

After dinner, the NFOB house hosted a party with a bonfire, gourmet s’mores, drinks and more with anyone who was in town for the weekend festivities. It was a relaxed time of great fellowship with friends from near and far.

On Saturday morning, the NFOB house hosted our monthly Prayer and Praise gathering. It was open to anyone who happened to be in town for Pieter’s ceremony and around 30 people came over! Filled with pastries and coffee, we prayed, read Scripture and sang a few of Pieter’s favorite worship songs. This was a wonderful way to anchor ourselves in the Lord in preparation for the ceremony.

By Saturday afternoon, it was time for the ceremony. It was a beautiful event with powerful liturgy and worship. Members of NFOB’s Pastoral Advisory Board led the ceremony and one of the emphases that stood out was why this type of ceremony is necessary and why it is such a big deal.

This is a big deal because, like a marriage commitment, the commitments Pieter made are permanent. Also, as Pieter committed to a lifetime of vocational singleness as Jesus talked about in Matthew 19 and Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians 7, he trusts that God will grant him the fuller grace to live out that commitment. That is a big deal as well!

Finally, after the ceremony, everyone got to celebrate Pieter and his commitments at the reception. Delicious food, drinks and delectable cake were had by all and the evening ended with a few toasts and a group singing of the Doxology accented with sparklers.

It was a beautiful weekend and one that none of us will soon forget. God is continuing to knit our family together and we are all grateful.

Congratulations Pieter!!
