Generación in Between is an initiative from the United Methodist Hispanic/Latino Communications office to create a space for young Hispanic/Latino people who are in the middle of two cultures and identify with both their diverse Latin American heritage and the United States’ culture. Hispanic/Latino youth and young adults in the US are a peculiar group with their own subcultures, issues and identi
ties. Hispanic/Latino young people speak Spanglish, eat burgers with a side of platano frito, watch novelas, soccer matches and “How I Met Your Mother”. They honor their Latino heritage every day, whether with a Frida Kahlo t-shirt, a flag hanging from the rearview mirror or refusing to not speak Spanish in public. Hispanic/Latino Millennials take social holiness to heart. They have seen the struggles of their parents and grandparents, their neighbors and friends. Hispanic/Latino Millennials grow up in the US knowing that their home country does not want them. They also know that they do not fit in in their parents’ home country. They also grow up answering, "'What' are you?" rather than, "Where are you from?"
This mix of cultures extends to church life. Some young people want a service in all English, while some want a service with Latin music but an English sermon. Some young people prefer an all Spanish service to connect with their roots. There is much diversity within this subgroup. Generacion in Between is a place where Latino Millennials can find content that they can identify with because it was intentionally created with their unique characteristic and needs in mind. It is a place where this generation can learn more about discipleship, social issues and what The United Methodist Church believes. It will be a creative, critical, controversial, conscious, innovative, prophetic and very Millennial space. Hispanic/Latino Millennials are the fastest growing age group in the United States and is projected that in the next few decades, this minority group will become the majority in adulthood. Latino Millennials are here to stay. Nosotros somos de aqui y somos de alla.
