December's issue of The High Calling is here!

🎉🎉🎉Available in NINE languages to reach and uplift even more of our brothers and sisters around the world: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Filipino, Urdu, Swahili, Farsi and Chichewa

The High Calling is an online magazine, available because of the collaboration between The Tidings, The Christadelphian, and Glad Tidings magazines with sponsorship provided by the Christadelphian Bible Mission groups. The spread of the gospel in the first century involved each person being able to hear and understand the words of truth in their own tongue (Acts 2:8). While we don’t have access to the Spirit gift of tongues today, we acknowledge that our goal must be to invest in the translated word. The High Calling is produced by a team of brothers and sisters who are dedicated to serving you.

Offered in 9 languages: https://thehighcalling.net/

Worry, anxiety and depression touch our lives in one way or another. It can have a crippling effect on our walk of faith. What advice did Jesus have for overcoming it? Where can we turn for help? The Bible has a lot to say about mental health matters. Joel Suntz and Tim Young begin with the basics of anxiety from a Biblical perspective. Joel then provides three ways to overcome it---developing faith, praying and helping others. Simple things that are hard to do.

Key verse:

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" Matthew 6:25

Tired of doing good

Written By Paul Zilmer

I’m sure I’ve written on this before. It’s something we, as the Lord’s disciples, need to remember—and more than that, put into practice. Just look around, and it’s clear that human beings in general adhere to it sporadically at best. Here it is:

Let’s not get tired of doing good. (Galatians 6:9)

We all know, or at least know of, people whose whole lives are dedicated to doing good. Many make no claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. I admire their dedication. For now though, let’s look at why Paul would write this encouragement specifically to believers.

The context is Paul’s exhortation to help carry one another’s burdens (verse 2), and yet paradoxically we each have to bear our own load (verse 5). You and your study group might want to discuss what he means in this seeming contradiction. Paul’s main point, though, is given in a mini-parable: We harvest the crop we plant.

Do not deceive yourselves; no one makes a fool of God. You will reap exactly what you plant. If you plant in the field of your natural desires, from it you will gather the harvest of death; if you plant in the field of the Spirit, from the Spirit you will gather the harvest of eternal life. So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest. (Galatians 6:7-9, GNT)

Where do we exert our effort, spend our time, focus our thoughts and plans? Questions like this always are uncomfortable for me, maybe for you too. Which is why Paul passes along this encouragement. It’s easy to get tired of the effort it takes to say no to the natural desires and do good instead. The encouragement is that the harvest we’re looking toward is nothing short of eternal life.

But he's not done. His conclusion:

So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith. (verse 10)

There is ample teaching, from the Law of Moses all the way to the words of Jesus, instructing us to do good—to whomever our “neighbor” might be. Paul says, that’s quite right and we should take every chance we get to do it. And on top of that, there is a special, extra necessity to do good for those in our faith family.

Bringing us back to helping one another with our burdens—whether those are physical needs for food and shelter, spiritual needs, or anything else.

The bottom line: (1) Eyes on the harvest. (2) Don’t get tired (which probably means pacing ourselves, but that can’t be an excuse to plant the wrong crop.) (3) Keep on doing good to all. (4) Special care for the family. Much easier to say than to implement and stick with. But that’s why the Lord provided people like Paul to encourage us.

Love, Paul

WCF NEWCOMERS PROGRAM YOUTH SUPPORT

https://www.wcfoundation.org/youth-support

WCF recognizes the challenges that face youth in today’s society. These challenges are especially great for young people who have been resettled to North America. The Newcomers program provides support for resettled youth to help foster connections with each other, and to networks within the household of faith

Youth Conference 2021
The isolation of the pandemic years has been especially difficult for young people. To support their need for a strong Biblical footing and for friendships in Christ, Newcomers sponsored Christadelphian young people whose families came to Canada and the United States as refugees, as well as an experienced mentor, to attend the Youth Conference. Here is what they had to say about the experience:

***

“It’s always nice going to bible camps and always amazing to have those Christ-like people around you. The encouragement and praises to God shared was amazing. It improves us as people and helps improve our relationship with God.”

“It was nice knowing that we were away from the world and the distractions of the world. My eyes were opened to how the world has influenced me and how I can improve myself as more Christ minded.”

“I definitely wish I could have stayed a lil’ longer but I understood I’ll always be in the world but not of the world. Always being aware of the world and not following the world but the word of God is what I want.”

“I’m grateful I had the chance to go.”

Medar, Baltimore ecclesia

“During these times of covid restrictions; not being able to be together etc has been draining. With all the chaos happening around the world, it was nice to get away and be with young people in person to study God’s word together”

“Being with other young people was so uplifting. It gave me a glimpse of the kingdom and strengthened me especially during these tough times.”

“The workbook was amazing. It had so many questions I had to reflect on and think over. It was nice to hear everyone’s answers in the discussion groups.”

Mulan, Toronto West ecclesia

“It was really nice seeing so many other young people... where you can connect with those who have the same hope, encouraging and uplifting each other. It’s not just all about coming together and learning God’s words but it's also about building friendships, relationships and working together toward God’s kingdom.”

“The discussions groups, classes, campfire songs and praises are what bring us together plus all the activities. We had the wonderful spotlight on God’s grace and the family He has given us.”

Emerance, Monroe Ecclesia, Washington State

ECBS 2022 - Congolese Brethren in America (Evening Program)

Eastern Christadelphian Bible School

When the Eastern Christadelphian Bible School was founded back in 1947 it had one central mission statement which the organizers summarized this way: “Our purpose simply is this: To make instruction in the Word of God more available to all who sincerely desire to learn.”

That mission has not changed in 75 years and this year, in our ongoing desire to live up to that, we’ve added a Bible class in Swahili for our local African brethren, led by Bro. Innocent Baruani, formally of the Democratic Republic of Congo and currently residing in Kansas City. By God’s grace and with the assistance of both the Williamsburg Christadelphian Foundation as well as several of our local ecclesias, we were able to bring several Congolese brethren and their families to ECBS this year to enjoy the fellowship, instruction, and spiritual fulfillment that only Bible School can provide. Our Bro. Innocent agreed to assist us in understanding how this influx of Congolese brethren occurred and what are the pressing needs of our African brethren both here and abroad.

This video documents a discussion between Bro Innocent Baruani and Jim Sullivan wherein is shared an account of the tragic story of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the beautiful story of ‘finding’ God’s truth in the midst of a harrowing experience. As our Father both challenges us and blesses us in our walk in faith, let us continue to strive to serve him; to love and serve each other and to promote His marvelous Word of Truth to all who sincerely desire to learn.
