The Good in Goodwill

We all know Goodwill for great deals and unique finds - but there’s so much more behind the storefront!

Join us this Wednesday, September 2, at 6:00pm in Room 124 as Danny Rhodes shares the inspiring story of Goodwill. Learn how an organization founded 125 years ago by a Methodist minister has grown into a leader in workforce development, environmental sustainability, and community well-being—and how its mission of “not charity, but a chance” continues to transform lives across Middle Tennessee.

We hope you’ll join us!

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” Today, our news apps, politicians, and social media amplify outrage, division, and tribalism. I fear we have lost our prayerful longing for peace. We may have traded the longing for peace for a desire to defeat our opponents. These are not the same things. Why would you listen to me if I am cursing you or calling you names? Can we hear Jesus whispering another way “Blessed are the peacemakers, they will be called the children of God.”

Maybe like me, you spent the week crying to Dolly tunes? In 1996 Dolly Parton covered Yusuf/Cat Stevens “Peace Train” for her album Treasures. Dolly heard the South African band Ladysmith Black Mam…

Belmont United Methodist Church is a community of Christ-followers growing in love of God and neighbor. This is what we at Belmont UMC believe Christian discipleship is, what we are to be, and what Jesus meant when he sent his followers to “make disciples.”
We believe every person is of sacred worth and created in God’s image. We commit to Jesus’ example of inclusive love, care, and intentional hospitality with persons of every race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, faith story, physical or mental ability, economic status, or political perspective. We respect our diversity of opinion and expressions of faith. Therefore, as God loves us, so let us love and serve in the name of Christ.

Last weekend, August 22–23, Belmont UMC’s youth choir headed to Grace Point Camp for their beginning-of-the-year Youth Choir Retreat!

They spent the weekend learning music, playing games, kayaking, and, most importantly, growing together as a choir. We’re excited for the year ahead and can’t wait for you to hear them sing in worship soon!

There’s nothing quite like walking the halls of Belmont UMC and hearing the joy and energy of our Children’s Ministries! We’re grateful for the dedicated and creative teachers who make church such a welcoming, meaningful, and fun place for our children.

This past Sunday, our children explored empathy and compassion and how those feelings can move us to act for justice. Through stories from Genesis, Exodus, Matthew, and Luke, they learned how God and Jesus saw people in need and were moved to help, heal, and make things right.

As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same - to see with compassion and respond with love and justice.

ICE and DHS are proposing a national immigration enforcement call center in Donelson, after a similar proposal in Adams, Tennessee, faced community opposition. The facility would expand coordination between ICE and law enforcement agencies nationwide, with potentially devastating consequences for immigrant communities.

Let’s make our voices heard: We do not want this in Nashville or anywhere in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) is hosting an information session this evening at 6:15pm to share details and organize a community response. Learn more and register: bit.ly/hanguponice.
