When everything feels out of control, it is easy to wonder where God is.

In Luke 22:1–38, we see betrayal, conspiracy, spiritual warfare, fear, and coming suffering. Yet through it all, Jesus is not a victim of circumstances. He is sovereignly moving toward the cross to accomplish our redemption.

The betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus were not history spinning out of control—they were God’s plan to save sinners.

Because Christ remained faithful in the darkest hour, we can trust Him when our lives feel chaotic. He has not lost control. He is preserving His people, accomplishing His purposes, and leading us safely into His kingdom.

“Even in the chaos, Jesus is in control.”

Jesus sovereignly fulfills all of God’s covenant promises through His betrayal, suffering, and death in order to accomplish the true Exodus and bring weak and failing disciples into His kingdom.

“He is the best artist, that can most lively and powerfully display Jesus Christ before the people, evidently setting him forth as crucified among them; and that is the best sermon, that is most full of Christ, not of art and language. I know that a holy dialect well becometh Christ’s ministers, they should not be rude and careless in language or method; but surely the excellency of a sermon lies not in that, but in the plainest discoveries and liveliest applications of Jesus Christ.” - John Flavel

Apocalyptic passages like Luke 21 can feel incredibly complex and heavy. Yet, unpacking these historical details actually helps us understand Jesus' ultimate design: to tear down our reliance on empty, fragile "shadows"—like career success, financial comfort, or political control.

When those worldly structures inevitably shake, we are left consumed by fear and anxiety. But the gospel shows us a more beautiful reality. Jesus, the true Temple, was destroyed on the cross to bear the judgment our false worship deserved. He rose again and poured out His Holy Spirit so that God’s presence now lives inside you.

Because your redemption is completely secure, holiness changes from a restrictive "have to" into a joyful "get to." This week, let's put the distractions away, look up, and rest in the supreme beauty of Christ.

Jesus is the true Temple who was destroyed on the cross for our sins and raised on the third day so that God’s presence would dwell with and within His people by the Spirit.

Stop settling for temporary shadows when the substance is standing right beside you. Jesus was broken and raised so that you would become a living temple of His presence—free from anxiety and secure in His eternal kingdom.

Jesus didn’t come demanding neon signs and loudspeakers announcing His greatness. He came as the suffering servant who gave Himself fully for sinners like us.

Because we bear God’s image, our whole lives belong to Him. And through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus restores us to joyful allegiance to God as His beloved children.

Jesus shows that our ultimate allegiance belongs to the Christ: the Son of God and the Son of Man.

What if farmhands used the owner’s tools to fence him out of his own field so they could keep the fruit for themselves?

That’s the picture Jesus gives in Luke 20.

We reject God’s authority because we want control, comfort, and the fruit for ourselves. Yet the good news is that Jesus, the rejected Cornerstone, was cast out and crucified to rescue rebels like us and bring us into God’s covenant family.

Jesus is not only the Son of God—He is the perfectly faithful steward who gave the Father everything, even His own life, so that we might receive the Spirit and joyfully bear fruit for God.

“We get to. Not have to.”

Because Jesus is the beloved Son and rejected Cornerstone who possesses all authority from the Father, we are no longer to live as though our lives belong to us, but to joyfully submit to Him and bear fruit for God by the Spirit.

The leaders feared being stoned by the people, yet refused to see they would be crushed by the very Stone they rejected—Jesus Christ.

But here’s the good news: Jesus was rejected and crucified so sinners like us could find refuge in Him instead of judgment from Him.

Will Christ be your refuge, or the Stone you reject?
