The tricentennial celebration of Bangor Episcopal Church reached a grand finale this weekend! On Saturday, October 1, a full church welcomed Bishop Audrey Scanlan for Evensong, followed by a Mid-Atlantic Welsh Choir concert. Hearing music sung in Welsh reminded us of Bangor’s Welsh origin in 1722. A hearty anniversary banquet was then prepared and served by our neighbors, the Caernarvon Fire Company.

Sunday morning, October 2, we again rang the church bells and welcomed Bishop Audrey Scanlan and Rev. David Peck from St. James Episcopal Church for a Solemn Festival Eucharist. Members of the St. James choir presented beautiful music.

Thank you to Rev. Canon Mark Scheneman (our pastor), Maurine VanDyke, and all of the volunteers for the many opportunities to celebrate and learn about our history throughout this tricentennial year. We have 300 years of faith and are not stopping! We welcome you to join us on Sundays.

Today we enjoyed celebrating 297 years of history at Bangor Episcopal Church on our Heritage Day! Our service was similar to the year 1810, and we had a chance to see the Bible given to Bangor in 1758. We look forward to celebrating our 300th anniversary in 2022!

Today was a time of grand celebration at Bangor! Sweet Isla was baptized, and the new church banner donated by Luci and Bob was dedicated. Father Mark also played bagpipes as a tribute to Isla's parents who first met each other in Scotland.

This is our Heritage Sunday, this year remembering the World War I era, one hundred years ago. The 10:00 service will be
Morning Prayer as the service was conducted circa 1917 (according to the 1892 Book of Common Prayer), with period correct hymns. Everyone is encouraged to get into the spirit of the day by wearing clothing and accessories that reflect that era: long skirts, gloves, and hats for ladies; vests with boater or bowler hats for men.

Following the service, we will gather outside in the churchyard to honor the WWI veterans buried there. A piper will be on hand to be part of the outdoor commemoration.

One of the highlights will certainly be the reading of two letters exchanged during the war between the parents of church member Dan Lake. His dad served in the war in France on the front. Dan’s family saved many of the letters after the war, which will provide us with genuine voices from the past.
