Our Church History from 1950-1985
1950-1958 Pastor Wilbert Werling, a former missionary to China, was installed. 1951 the Young People’s Society of the congregation joined the Walther League. 100th Anniversary was celebrated. The LWML started in 1956.
1958 Vacancy Pastor Senn
1958-1973 Pastor Leonhard J. Rausch of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Florida, Ohio, began serving a vacancy at St. Paul that affects the relationship between these two congregations to this very day. On January 3, 1960, the St. Peter congregation voted to “share our pastor with our neighboring congregation.” The LWML and Ladies Aid started a Red Stocking money donation that was given to a charity and eventually was given to an Adopted Seminary student every December.
1973-1974 Vacancy Pastors Ernest Laabs and Paul Weber
1974-1984 Pastor James F. Haenftling, 125th Anniversary Celebration in 1976. A Church secretary was hired. St. Paul and St. Peter were officially declared a dual parish.

History of our Church from 1902-1950
1902-1911 Pastor Carl Herman Schroeder, the church was remodeled in 1904, with a total cost of $4,486.44.

-1916-1917 Vacancy Pastor H.C. Siegert
1917-1921 Pastor Herman Henry Huge, congregation joined the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 1918.
1921-1924 Pastor Walter J. Andres, services changed from German-English to English primarily in 1924. families were encouraged to sit together instead of Men on one side and Women and Children on other side. The Christmas program was cancelled in 1922 due to the Smallpox outbreak. Electric lights were installed in the Church, a new organ was purchased in 1922
1924 Vacancy Pastor Theodore Luft
1924-1946 Pastor Frederick William Hortsman, in 1927 Ohio adopted Eastern Standard Time. Pastor took a pay cut during Depression. Ladies Aide started in 1944
1946-1950 Pastor Robert E. Wunderlich in 1948 a basement was constructed and the Church was moved on top of it. The interior and exterior of the church was painted and the laying of the old cornerstone took place August 7, 1949. The Schoolhouse was sold. 1950 a new oil furnace and a new organ were purchased. Pastor typed and printed bulletins. Communion changed from common cup to individual cups.

History of our Church from 1858 to 1901

In the year 1858 Adolph William Bergt served our congregation until 1864. Pastor Bergt started the Record Keeping book, recording the Baptisms, Confirmations, Marriages and Funerals.
The first piece of property the congregation acquired was bought from Tobias Knipp, June 30, 1863, for $1.50. On this plot of ground, at the northeast corner of our present cemetery, a frame church was dedicated the Sunday before Christmas, 1863.

1884-1898 Pastor William L. Fischer, in 1892 a schoolhouse was built on the Church property.
1898-1902 Pastor Simon Hofmann, in 1901 a parsonage was built. 50th Anniversary celebrated 1901.

St Paul Lutheran Church Celebrating their 175th Year!

“It was in the year 1851, August the 25th that the evangelical Lutheran pastor, Adam Detzer, came into this settlement in order to baptize three children. At this occasion the settlers in these parts consulted with Detzer that he would, if possible, preach God’s Word to them. In answer to this request, he preached several years, and because of great lack of time, every four weeks, on a week day.” So we read in the opening words of the oldest historical account of our congregation on record.

Pastor Detzer served our congregation until Candidate Henry Koenig, a graduate of the Fort Wayne seminary was ordained by Pastor Detzer in Knipp’s settlement in Flatrock Township in a log schoolhouse August 14, 1853. Pastor Koenig resided in Texas and traveled from there through Napoleon and into Florida as his circuit. For some unexplained reason, however, he quit his charge in the summer of 1856. After his departure the congregation called a Reformed preacher by the name of Bank. Having served the members for about three years, Pastor Bank desired that the congregation join a Reformed Synod. As a result the congregation separated. Again the Lutheran element turned to Pastor Detzer, and again Pastor Detzer, in time of need, proclaimed the Word of God once every four weeks on a weekday.

It was at this time also that the congregation decided to henceforth be called St. Paul’s Congregation.

This past April, we celebrated Easter. Easter is the time where we celebrate the new life that Christ has given us by his death and resurrection. In May we celebrate Ascension (It actually falls on May 14th in 2026). While Easter teaches us about new life, Ascension teaches us where the new life is
