It’s More Than Pencils!
This is what your generosity means to the children and families we partner with in Haiti.
Pastor Valcourt, Director of our schools in Haiti, shared this message with us:
“Receiving donations of school supplies is truly a great blessing for everyone: parents, students, and teachers. Purchasing school supplies in Haiti is very expensive, especially because of the difficult situation we are living through. Every year, the need becomes greater, and it is harder for families to provide what their children need for school. We serve over 350 children, and most of the families do not have the money to pay for the supplies.
Just hearing that school supplies are being sent brings us great joy and encouragement. This year, the Ministry of National Education has announced that schools will reopen on September 7. Many parents wished school would start in October so they would have more time to prepare. But even then, it would still be very difficult for many families.
Your support through school supplies and other necessities is a great help. It allows children to come to school with what they need to learn. It gives parents hope because they know their children can begin the school year prepared. Most of all, it reminds our children that they are loved and that people care about their future.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kindness and generosity. May God bless you for helping the children of Haiti.”
There’s still time to help. School supply collections continue through Tuesday, September 2, with collection containers at both OSLC campuses.
A few extra supplies can send a powerful message: You are loved. Your future matters.
Thank you for helping us send that message to Haiti. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

You can also donate through our Realm page indicating Nepal in the dropdown. ❤️

We are horrified and saddened by the news coming from Nepal about the flash flooding today. The ELCA is in contact with our companions and partners in Nepal as the impact continues to unfold. We hold our companions and partners, and the people of Nepal and Tibet in prayer in this incredibly challenging time.

Let us pray:

Loving God, in the communion of Christ, we are joined with the trials and sufferings of all. Be with the people of Nepal and Tibet affected by devastating flash flooding. Protect those who remain in danger, comfort those who grieve, strengthen first responders and aid workers, and guide leaders as they coordinate relief efforts.

Surround our companions and partners with your presence and peace. In the midst of uncertainty and loss, sustain hope, courage, and resilience through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

You can also donate to Lutheran Disaster Response through our Realm page. Indicate “Nepal” in the drop down.

This weekend, we celebrated the start of a new school year, blessed our students and teachers, and reflected on three summer mission trips to Milwaukee, Slovakia, and Mozambique.
Pastor Brian and Pastor Elisabeth reminded us that we may leave on a mission thinking we’re going to do something specific, only to discover that the experience changes us along the way. We encounter God through the people we meet, the welcome we receive, the connections we make, and the ways love becomes action.
Our youth shared stories of their experiences, from community gardens and host families to new friendships and moments when strangers became something more like family. Their stories remind us that faith isn’t only something we believe. It’s something we discover and live as we connect with others, stay open to new experiences, and pay attention to the moments that shape us.
A huge thank you to all the kids who participated in our mission trips, shared their stories, led us in worship and helped us celebrate the new school year. We are grateful for the ways they show us what it looks like to step out, try something new, and see things differently along the way.
Want to hear more? As always, head to our OSLC YouTube page to hear the full sermons, including the story of Samuel from Maputo and why he is so amazing, a CYFM recap video, and much, much more, including stories from mission youth who couldn’t join us in person.

Sometimes our assumptions about giving and receiving can create distance between us.
In this sermon story from Mozambique, an orange becomes a reminder that abundance isn’t just about what we have. It’s about being willing to give, receive, and recognize one another as neighbors.
There is enough to share.
