Summer Conversations: Loving Your Neighbor

This summer, we’re opening the doors to conversations that matter—real-life, real-faith discussions on how to love the people God has placed right in front of us.

This is your chance to lean in, listen well, and grow in the everyday art of loving your neighbor—whether that neighbor lives in Naperville, practices a different religion, or is part of your own family.

This July, during the 9 AM Sunday school hour, we’ll examine the following issues:

• July 12: Loving Your Adult Children: An interactive conversation based on the book Loving Your Adult Children by Gaye B. Clark; copies available in the Parlor for a suggested donation of $10; you are encouraged to read the book in advance, but if you can’t, please come anyway.

• July 19: Loving Your Catholic Neighbors (with Chris Castaldo)

• July 26: Loving Your South Asian Neighbors (with Shaun Singh)

Join us as we grow together in the everyday, practical work of loving our neighbors well.

There it sits in our hymnal, between “Wonderful Grace of Jesus” and “Grace Greater Than Our Sin,” in the section labeled “Jesus Our Savior: His Grace, Love, and Mercy.” I have overlooked it, or looked past it, many times. Recently it caught my attention because in another setting I am directing a choral arrangement of “Arise, My Soul, Arise.”

After the horror show of Judges, the Book of Ruth comes to us as a romantic comedy, not in the “ha ha!” but in the literary sense—a narrative that moves from disorder to order, from tension to resolution, and ends in restoration or renewal. The story in Ruth begins with hardship and ends with a happy wedding. What happens in Ruth is a microcosm of the larger divine comedy of Scripture.

God does not love you because you are good. He loves you because of His own mercy and compassion. While some say that this makes salvation unfair, the truth is, it provides the only guarantee possible that we will spend eternity with Him.

This Sunday, May 24th, Chris Castaldo will preach “The Father’s Steadfast Love,” a message from Malachi 1:1–5. It’s part of our new preaching series, “Malachi: Return to Me.” The worship service begins at 10:30 AM.

Our regular Sunday school schedule for adults, youth, and children is on hiatus until Labor Day. Join us for coffee and treats right after the service.

NCC is located at 1 Bunting Lane in Naperville, at the corner of Washington and 75th streets.
