Do you dislike the hassle of going to the gym to get physically fit? Would you rather stay home where no one can watch you struggle with the machines and floor exercises at a gym?

The Wellness Ministry here at St. Philip Lutheran Church has the perfect solution for you!

For two months earlier this year, we were blessed by a Chair Yoga Instructor, Barbara Merckle, who volunteered to run a weekly class for church and community members. During one of the last classes, Barbara allowed us to record the class!

The class in now on YouTube so that all can work out in privacy and at their leisure. All of the exercises are performed sitting in a chair or standing. The video is open to all church and community members. To access the class, please head to this link: https://youtu.be/7GpUX_DdaDc?si=l1yHW6kHxVwi2Hp3

“You already know why I’m here,” said Brent Lank as he took his place at the table. Brent moved to Myrtle Beach to support his partner, John Sparkman, who is St. Philip’s Director of Music Ministries. However, Brent has found his own place in the worship, welcome, and ministry of St. Philip.

His life of faith started because of his mom, and reading his Bible helped him feel more connected to her. He grew up in a Baptist congregation, which was meaningful for a time. But eventually, Brent felt alone and disconnected. He took time away from church, needing to figure out life and faith. It was in this process that he heard God tell him, “It’s OK. You are who I made you to be.”

“When I returned to church, I felt home again,” Brent said.

But upon arrival in Myrtle Beach, Brent again felt alone and disconnected. He remembered thinking, “You’re in a new place, you know it’s going to be tough to meet people.” The weight of starting over felt heavy; walking into a group of people you don’t know is hard. But instead of distancing himself, Brent took a chance and jumped right into St. Philip’s ministries.

“The welcome I received…” Brent paused. “I’m really thankful for that.”

One moment stands out: going Christmas caroling just a few weeks after arriving. The event had a big impact on Brent as he felt like part of the community – singing at people’s doors, laughing together, and sharing cookies afterwards. “Nothing brings people together like singing and sugar,” Brent joked. But then, he reflected more deeply on his involvement with the choir: “The music we make gives me a strong spiritual connection. It’s rewarding and gives me a purpose.”

Brent is making connections with others at St. Philip, but also, he feels connected to God. He notes that these connections carry over into his week. “It helps with my day-to-day. I know God is with me, and if I’m a child of God, so are other people.” It changes how Brent walks through the world, with more patience, more kindness, and more hope.

At St. Philip, Brent has found a community where he can belong, serve, and fully be who God made him to be.

I know that my redeemer lives.
- Job 19:25 NIV

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.
- 1 Corinthians 15:20

Let us pray. Living God, you are our redeemer, and in you, we find hope. Just as Christ was raised, we trust in your promise of new life. Strengthen our faith, that we may live with joy, knowing death is not the end. Amen.

Come help us serve our hungry and homeless neighbors.

Our Feeding the Hungry Meal is coming up on May 30th, and we need your help. St. Philip is collecting new baseball caps for the men we serve that day.

If you can contribute a new cap (or a very gently used one), please place it in the collection box in the narthex. Every gift shows our guests that they are seen, valued, and cared for.

Thank you for being part of St. Philip's faithful service to our community.

I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
- Psalm 89:1

And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.
- Mark 16:20

Let us pray. Faithful One, your love never ends. We rejoice in your goodness and proclaim your faithfulness to all. As you worked through the disciples, work through us to share your good news with the world. Let our lives sing your praise. Amen.
