A Little Trimming
One of David Patterson’s first acts at St. Philip was trimming the palmetto trees. That may not sound like a particularly profound beginning to a new chapter in someone’s life, but for David, it was a sign that he had found a place where he could once again put his hands to work and be part of a church community.
David’s journey back to church began with tremendous loss. His mother died at Christmas in 1999, his father a week later, and his favorite aunt a week after that. In less than three weeks, David had lost the three most important people in his life. At his lowest point, he felt a pull from God and committed himself to finding a church where he could worship and become active again.
Almost immediately, David and his partner found a Lutheran congregation where they worshiped together and remained for 25 years. David became deeply involved, serving on Council, working with the Grounds Committee, and caring for the church building. After 25 years, though, David and his partner found themselves ready to trim back and begin a new chapter. They decided to visit St. Philip, in part because David had already been impressed with Pastor Jason through previous encounters at conference-wide worship services.
When they arrived, they were not looking for another list of things to do; they were looking for the comfort and friendship of Christian community. Pastor Jason encouraged David to take some time to heal before becoming too involved. Before long, however, David was trimming those palmetto trees.
As David spent more time at St. Philip, he experienced a welcome that went deeper than simply being greeted at the door. Through Pastor Jason, a special couple, and many others, he began to feel that he was where he was supposed to be, “where God wants me to be.”
He especially appreciates the friendliness, warmth, and generosity of the congregation. He says that here, burdens feel lighter, decisions are more comfortable, and it is a blessing to be surrounded by people who are dedicated to one another and to the church.
Most of all, David has rediscovered the joy of serving. He is “grateful for the opportunity to serve in any way our church needs me.”
