Two nights ago, Temple Emanu-El held its annual public lighting of the outdoor Hanukkah menorah in Myrtle Beach, complete with singing of Hebrew and English songs plus sharing in the traditional sufganiot (jelly donuts). The event had added significance this year in the aftermath of the horrific evil that was perpetrated during the outdoor observance in Sydney, Australia.

This year’s Yom HaShoah observance, jointly sponsored by Chabad of Myrtle Beach and Temple Emanu-El, took place before a packed hall at the local Chabad Community Center. In addition to local rabbis, an array of local dignitaries addressed the audience. While they took note of the somber nature of the Shoah, they also expressed an air of hope for the future. Part of that hope can be seen in the faces of the children, who concluded the proceedings with readings and song.
