918-687-1351 Where and how to start the story of the Catholic Faith in Muskogee? It's involved. There is Fr. Joseph School.

William Ketchum way back in Ft. Gibson and Indian Territory and a parish of 14,000 sq. miles and most of Eastern Oklahoma. The Church of the Assumption, our first parish, was started and built in Muskogee, first in Indian Territory (1891) and then again in the State of Oklahoma (1911). Complicated best describes how the parish of the Sacred Heart started in 1921, given the misunderstandings among

the pastors and Bishop Meerschart. By 1950, its new Church, Rectory and Convent were ready for more than 40 years of service to the Catholic community. Complicated is the how and why of the parish of St. Augustine (1939), set aside to serve Muskogee's African-American Catholics in another time that accepted segregation as a given. This was closed in 1969 as integration brought all of Muskogee's Catholics together. In 1981, "Catholic Ministries of Muskogee" brought together co-pastors, Fathers Gregory A. Gier and Herman Foken, and parish liturgies and ministries of education, pastoral councils, youth and service to the poor. In August 1992, "St. Joseph" became the new title of a single combined parish in a modern, beautiful sanctuary, commons and classrooms on a shared campus with St. A Parish Hall and Offices with more classrooms was added in 2007. A stand-alone Catholic Charities Center and Infant Supply Closet (2004) keep a presence on Muskogee's Westside. In 1976, Muskogee Catholics were joined by several dozen refugee families from Vietnam, who resettled in our area. In the late 1980s, an increasing number of immigrants from Mexico led to a monthly bi-lingual English-Spanish Mass, which by the 1990s grew to a weekly Mass in Spanish and all the sacraments and cultural celebrations and now forms an integral part of our community. Catholic education in Muskogee is as complicated as parish life. It meanders through Assumption School (1890-1896); Nazareth Institute and Academy for Girls (1896-1932); Sacred Heart Grade School (1921-1968); St. Joseph Preparatory School (1903-1955); St. Joseph Grade School (1964-Present) which absorbed Sacred Heart School in 1968 and was for a while Muskogee Christian Learning Center. St. Joseph School is now an integral ministry of St. Joseph Church, serving students of all faiths, Pre-K - 8th Grade. Our story as a Catholic parish is complicated with more than a usual share of twists and turns, but above all and mostly resilient- a lot like Muskogee itself.

MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGELIO

31 de mayo de 2026 - La Santísima Trinidad
Juan 3:16-18

GOSPEL MEDITATION

May 31, 2026 - The Most Holy Trinity
John 3:16-18

I was 16 years old on a youth group retreat in the mountains. One night, I opened my heart to the message being proclaimed: that God so loved the world that He sent His Son for us. Later, I lay under the pine trees and looked up at the countless stars. They seemed different. No longer cold, distant balls of chemical reactions, they appeared as an expression of God’s love, as if He were giving those stars directly to me. The truth of God sending His Son changed how I saw the whole universe.

That is what today’s Gospel reveals: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” (John 3:16) The universe is not just a whirl of impersonal forces or empty space. At its heart is a gift: the Father eternally giving the Son, not to condemn, but to bring life.

This is not abstract doctrine but deeply personal. God gives His Son for you and me. Each human life is precious enough to be caught up in that eternal gift.

It is in the Mass where we encounter this most directly. In the Word proclaimed, in the assembly gathered, in the priest, and above all in the Eucharist, the Father once again gives His Son. What looks like bread and wine is the drama of the Trinity, laboring to love us here and now.

The Trinity is not a puzzle to solve but the blazing Truth at the center of everything: the Father gives the Son for you and me. Lord, help us to see this more clearly.

MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGELIO

24 de mayo de 2026 - Dia de Pentecostés
Juan 20:19-23

(Juan 20:21). La paz une, anima y fortalece.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

May 24, 2026 - Pentecost Sunday
John 20:19-23

“He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (John 20:22–23)

For those of us who go to confession regularly, there is often a familiar frustration: “Why do I keep confessing the same sins?” It can feel like a loop, cleansed but unchanged.

Pentecost reveals a hopeful perspective. When the Risen Jesus breathes on his ashamed and fearful disciples and gives them the Holy Spirit, he echoes Genesis, when God breathes life into Adam. This is not just primarily the removal of guilt, but new creation.

In confession, we receive more than forgiveness. We receive a fresh outpouring, the breath of the Spirit, and a renewed mission. Jesus does not say to us, “You’re forgiven, now go back to your old life.” He says, so to speak, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21)

That is why penance is not just saying a few prayers. It is reorientation. It is the Spirit summoning us to live differently: with mercy and healing.

Just as Adam was sent into the world, and the Apostles were sent out after Pentecost, so too we are sent from the confessional — not just clean, but consecrated.

Pentecost Challenge: After your next confession, ask the Holy Spirit for one way you can participate in Christ’s healing will for you. Then take one small, concrete step, and do not look back.

Happy to have had Former Pastor of St Joseph (now in Resurrection Tulsa) Fr. Mike Knipe for this Saturday Vigil Mass as we begin Pentecost.

Everything is red in honor of Pentecost. May our hearts burn with the Flame of God’s Love, the Holy Spirit within us.

Let us pray: “O God, who by today's great feast of Pentecost sanctify your whole Church in every people and nation, pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit across the face of the earth and, with the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel was first proclaimed, fill now once more the hearts of believers.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Day 9 Prayer intention: for those who are grieving or experiencing loss or loneliness.

Holy Spirit, comfort the afflicted. Spirit of Consolation, let us know the Father’s love for us. Christ died and rose again to restore us to friendship. Never allow us to be separated from God but instead increase our desire to follow Christ. (One ‘Hail Mary’)

Let us pray: Come Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful and Kindle in us the fire of your Love. Amen.

Day 8 Prayer intention: for all workers, farmers, teachers and artists.

Come Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and dwell in our hearts. Bring your Goodness. Inspire us to work for the common good. Thank You for people who bring us closer to You by their work among us and give us a share in all that is true, good and beautiful in this world created by Your Loving Hands. Keep us free from sin and selfishness. (Pray one 'Glory Be')

Let us pray: Come Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful and Kindle in us the fire of your Love. Amen.
