Our mission, is to form disciples of Jesus Christ in the image of our Mother of Sorrows. Like Mary, standing at the foot of the Cross, we stand by one another with deep compassion by reaching out to share the joys and sorrows of daily life in our homes, schools, workplace, community and world. This mission is rooted in Baptism and renewed weekly by our participation in the Sunday Eucharist.

Sacred Art #99
“The Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter”
Pietro Perugino , 1481-1482

“And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.”

These are Jesus’ words to Peter which come to life in the Renaissance masterpiece “The Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter” by Pietro Perugino.

In this fresco, Christ stands in the center, handing over the two keys to a reverent Peter (the first pope) who kneels in acceptance. By these commissioning words, Jesus entrusts Peter to lead and shepherd the Church of his time and to ultimately hand this authority to the popes that follow him. The apostles (with halos) and others contemporary townsfolk (without halos) stand to either side with attentive eyes. Judas is the fifth figure to the left of Christ. The person in a black beret in the right foreground is believed to be a self-portrait of the artist.

In the middle distance are two scenes from the life of Christ, including the Tribute Money on the left and the stoning of Christ on the right.

The painting is known for its harmonious, symmetric composition, linear perspective, detailed architectural backdrop (Roman arches flanking the Temple of Jerusalem) and luminous colors characteristic of the high Renaissance.

“The Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter” is found on the north wall of The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, part of the scenes in the life of Christ.

Though St. Vitus was removed from the calendar of saints after Vatican II, he is still recognized as a saint, with special devotion in Serbia. His feast day is today, June 15.

St. Vitus was born in Sicily and converted to Christianity with the assistance of St. Modestus and St. Crescentia. As Christianity was not allowed in the Roman Empire, all three of them were arrested. Legend has it that they escaped but then taken to Rome to deal with Diocletian’s son who had epilepsy but, at that time, the narrative was that he was “possessed by a demon.” They were apparently successful in curing Diocletian’s son but when they refused to renounce their faith, they were all sentenced to death. Initially they were placed in a cauldron full of hot liquid but they were not harmed. They were thrown to the lions but the lions did not attack them. Diocletian, angered that they were still alive, ordered them to be stretched on the rack. Shortly thereafter, they all died.

Sydenham’s chorea, a rare neurological disease causing uncoordinated jerking movements of the face, hands, and feet, is sometimes known as St. Vitus Dance. This is because people with Sydenham’s chorea went to the chapels of St. Vitus in hopes for a cure. Some sources attribute St. Vitus Dance to the movements seen in an epileptic attack.

St. Vitus is one of the 14 Holy Helpers, a group of saints who are called upon for help in certain disease. Saint Vitus in invoked against paralysis, nervous diseases, and epilepsy. Their group feast day is August 8.

This video walks through the 7 “I am” statements of Jesus in the gospel of John. Jesus is the bread of life, the light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth, and the life, and the true vine.
