On this holiday we call Thanksgiving, we take some time to reach beyond a meal, beyond the common trappings we surround ourselves with. Let us recall the origin of the holiday. Thanksgiving points us back to a time when those who first celebrated it were simply thankful to have survived as long as they had. They didn't have a lavish table covered with all their favorite dishes. They might have had corn, maybe potatoes, and quite possibly turkey. What they were eating was second place to the fact they had survived. They were grateful to be alive; which would not have been possible without the help of some friends they made and the providence of God to sustain them. Phillipians 4:6 states, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." The first celebrants of Thanksgiving were grateful and thankful to God for sustaining them through some tough times, and they had more tough times to come. This Thanksgiving, take some time to make sure to express gratitude and appreciation to the God who has sustained every one of us, and let's remember to live every day according to what is in the Scriptures.

On July 26, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the U.S. postal system with Ben Franklin as the first postmaster general. Local postal systems had already existed in various places throughout the colonies, but there was no national system. Many steps were taken to improve the speed of mail delivery which could take months to send a letter from one place to another, depending on where it was being sent from and where it was going. Even with modern advancements mail can still take up to several weeks for a letter to get from point A to point B. The access to email has dramatically cut the amount of time it takes to send and receive messages from days or weeks to mere seconds. But the Bible tells us of a communication system that is even faster than email. Isaiah 65:24 states, “It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.” There is no delay or lag when communicating with God, though there are times when His reply may not come as fast as or in the way we would like it to come. Regardless of how fast, or in some cases how slow God’s response may seem, He hears you and knows what you have need of before you ever ask Him. Be encouraged today for God knows what your needs are and let us live every day according to what is in the Scriptures.

On July 4, 1776, the 2nd Contental Congress accepted and embraced the Declaration of Independence, thus declaring freedom from the British crown. But simply declaring freedom did not automatically give freedom. Rather, a long and bloody war ensued between the then 13 colonies and the British Empire ultimately claiming the lives of more than 250,000 people from either fighting or disease, with nearly 80% of those being from the American side of the conflict. Freedom came with a very high price. While we today celebrate our national freedom with fireworks and cookouts, we must never lose sight of the fact that the truest form of freedom was actually won over 17 centuries before the Declaration of Independence was signed. This freedom is in the blood of Christ as seen from Calvary's cruel cross. This blood, shed by One for many, is what paid the price for us to be able to not simply live free from an uncaring, distant, and tyrannical crown, but to live free from sin and the bo***ge of death we are all trapped in. Jesus' words "it is finished" declared freedom from sin, but the battle has raged on, and the ultimate victory is close at hand. As we celebrate our nation's freedom and watch fireworks explode in the skies overhead, let us remember that one day soon the sky will be rolled back like a scroll, the elements will melt with servant heat, and the Lord Himself shall descend with a shout, a trumpet blast, and the voice of the Archangel, and the dead in Christ will rise first, then the living redeemed will be gather together with them in the air ever to live in true, lasting, eternal freedom from sin and death. Celebrate freedom with joy, but always remember where real hope comes from, and strive to live every day according to what is in the Scriptures.
