As we continue our journey through the book of Luke, this story from Luke 5 may seem like it’s just a story about a sick man getting healed, but it is so much more. It teaches us that God does not come to the self-sufficient, those who think they have no need or imagine they can make it on their own. He comes to the empty in spirit, those who mourn their condition. If you would come to Christ, this is the way you must come—saying, “Unclean!” Christ’s healing touch doesn’t come in response to a casual, irreverent acknowledgment. It comes as we bow before Him in the realization that He is our only hope.

Have you ever been around a fisherman? Sometimes their stories (and the fish) grow bigger and bigger. Well, this Sunday, we’re going to see the story of the first disciples and if Jesus hadn’t been involved, it would sound like a fish story out of control. But in the end, the story is less about the fish and more about four guys that abandon everything to fish for people for life.

This Sunday is a fifth Sunday and as such, we will be having a prayer service. Last time, we spent the time Praising God for all that He has done for us. It is appropriate for our prayers to start with Praise. But this Sunday, we are going to pray Repentance. A part of prayer is to acknowledge our sin and seek forgiveness. We have no right to go further in our prayers until we are made right with God.

We’ve seen that Jesus’ authority came from the power of the Spirit and His preaching the Word of God. This Sunday we will see that authority play out in the real world – from those close to Him to the whole world. The Good News of Jesus’ love and salvation is for all people. As Christians we ought to be doing everything we can to see God’s “kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”

Jesus had been rejected in His hometown because they were too familiar with Him and couldn’t see Him as their Savior. But that was not the case in a neighboring community. There He was accepted and welcomed. The result was that Jesus did many miracles. His authority came from His preaching of the Word of God. It is through God’s Word that we have power to make a difference in this world.

The people of Nazareth had known Jesus since He was a baby. They had seen Him grow up. They knew He was an upstanding man. Many of them called Him friend and neighbor. They knew Him. And that was the problem, they knew Him and therefore they couldn’t see or know Him as the Christ. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people, especially in the church, that know about Jesus. They know the stories. They like what He had to say. They follow His moral teaching. But they don’t see or know Him as the Christ (Savior).

This week we are going to take a break from our studies from the Gospel According to Luke and focus on another letter written by Luke: Acts. As the early church developed, Luke recorded an issue that arose among the believers. It was an issue so big that it threated the life of the church. The Apostles handled the situation in a wise way. Instead of fixing the problem themselves, they turned it over to some men in the church which allowed them to grow in their faith while allowing the Apostles to continue the work that God had for them.

After Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist and the celebration of the Holy Trinity at the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry, Jesus was compelled by the Holy Spirit to go into the wilderness for forty days where He was tempted by the devil. It was more than a three and done scenario, but this Sunday we will look at three temptations that are common to most if not all people.
