Congratulations to Rev. Jennifer Newell!!

Welcome Louisa Woosley Preaching Initiative Program Director!

The Reverend Jennifer (Jen) Newell is the new Program Director for the Louisa Woosley Preaching Initiative. Rev. Newell is a graduate of UT-Chattanooga and the Program of Alternate Studies. She has 21 years of management experience at McKay Books, and 16 years of ministry experience at First Cumberland in Cleveland, Tennessee—the last ten as Senior Pastor. Since her ordination in 2009, Rev. Newell has served the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination as a writer for Encounter, president of the Memphis Theological Seminary Board of Trustees, stated clerk and moderator of Tennessee-Georgia Presbytery, instructor in the Program of Alternate Studies, and on several Presbytery and General Assembly committees. She is currently the president of the Tennessee-Georgia regional Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry.

Jen and Chuck Newell have been married 31 years. They have three adult children (Ellie, Evan, and Zoe), two cats who refuse to stay off the kitchen table (King Friday the XIII and Malka), an adorable one-year-old grandson (Ambrose), thousands of books, and season tickets for their favorite local soccer team.

Regarding the Compelling Preaching Initiative funded by a Lilly Endowment grant, Jen says, “The Good News of Jesus Christ does not change, but the contexts and communities in which we preach do. While we might not always love the way the world is changing, we can be sure that God’s love for the world remains unchanged—and that means there is still Good News to share.

That’s what the Louisa Woosley Preaching Initiative intends to do: to help us understand where the “disconnects” are between our current preaching methods/habits/assumptions and the world we are trying to reach, and to equip us to do a better job reaching a broader audience so that the Good News of Jesus Christ sounds both GOOD and like NEWS.

That’s a tall order—and an exciting opportunity! I look forward to helping us identify and face the challenges of preaching in the world as it is; so that, by the grace of God, it doesn’t have to stay that way.”

Rev. Dr. Pam Phillips-Burk states, “I am excited for Jen to help launch this new, exciting program. She will bring strong leadership skills, creativity, dedication, and a high appreciation and knowledge of preaching to her ministry. I’m eager to see what new things God will do through Jen, this program, and in the lives of our ministers and churches.”

Love your neighbor illustration!

This beautiful sculpture was built by the Irish people in their own country to honor the American Choctaw Indian tribe. They were grateful because in 1847 the Choctaw people sent money to Ireland when they learned that Irish people were starving due to the potato famine. The Choctaw themselves were living in hardship and poverty, having recently endured the Trail of Tears.
And that is a lesson in how to be a person in this world.
Kindred Spirits is a large stainless steel outdoor sculpture in Bailick Park in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. The shape of the feathers is intended to represent a bowl of food.

Wildfires in Maui, Hawaii

The devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui last week have upended communities and forced thousands of residents to evacuate. Volunteers and aid groups have mobilized to help feed and shelter those who have been affected.

We encourage those who feel led to financially donate to the relief effort, to find a reputable charity of their choice or those interested in sending donations through the denomination may send to Missions Ministry Team, ATTN: Maui Wildfires, 8207 Traditional Place, Cordova, TN 38016. As always, 100% of all funds received will go straight to help victims of the wildfires.

An organization which has been listed as a reputable is Feed My Sheep (feedmysheepmaui.com). Supported by over 20 churches on the island, Feed My Sheep is a unique mobile food distribution program. Feed My Sheep takes food distribution to neighborhoods of need each week. Staff and volunteers pass out groceries to those who need help and who qualify financially.

Each person receives at least 10 lbs of food with an emphasis on fresh produce and balanced nutrition. Emotional support, offering a listening ear and prayer so that victims can experience love and not judgment in their time of need is provided. They are currently aiding wildfire victims.

A Prayer for Those Experiencing Devastation
Rev. Kristi Lounsbury

Dear God,
who has created the wind, the rain, and the fire, this past week, many people have experienced the heat of hell on Earth.

Losing loved ones, friends and pets, homes, and other physical items, the people of Maui need your loving presence.

We pray for those who are being the hands and feet of Jesus
by providing shelter, food, a listening ear, and a shoulder to cry upon as devastating news continues to be heard throughout the land.

Hold up the brokenhearted. Heal the hurting. Help the helpless.
In Christ’s name, Amen.
