“As we move into the final days of Advent, we ask… How might our love - fragile, imperfect, but real - become the ground where God’s promise takes root?
This week, we’re not asked to fix the world. We’re asked to take each other’s hands and walk forward into it - together.”

Reflection “When You’re Afraid, Give Me Your Hand.”by Rev. Dr. Boyung Lee

During this 3rd week of Advent…

“God calls us not only to action, but to become fully ourselves. Fear doesn’t disqualify us - it’s part of the process. And God promises to walk with us, every trembling step.”

As we begin the second week of Advent…

“Advent does not require us to manufacture hope. It invites us to bring our emptied hope to Jesus, to ask the hard questions, and to listen again for signs of God’s nearness.
When we’re running out of hope, it may be the perfect time to ask:
What do you see?
What do you hear?
And to trust that somewhere, even now, something new is springing forth.”

Reflection “When We’re Running Out of Hope, God is At Work”by Rev. Dr. Boyung Lee

First week of Advent…
“In the time of Herod…”
the world was loud with empire’s threats,
echoing with grief and longing.
And still - God broke in.
In the time of fear,
God heard a prayer.
And responded with presence.
This Advent, perhaps the question is
not how we rid ourselves of fear.
Perhaps the deeper invitation is this:
Can we name our fear honestly
and still believe God is near?

It’s time for Silly Sock Sunday!
This Sunday, October 5, we will be kicking off this year’s Socktober Night Ministry Sock Drive. Show your support for this important service project by wearing your silliest or most colorful socks to Worship on Sunday! New socks are the most requested, and needed, item at homeless shelters. Please consider donating a package of socks during Ivanhoe’s Socktober sock drive! Baskets will be located in Fellowship Hall for your sock donations.

Starting in October, we will begin a new book conversations series of “Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand” by Jeff Chu. “This book is a tribute to friendship, to the sacredness of our bond with the natural world, and to how love can grow from the unlikeliest of places.” - Amazon Book Review. The book conversations will be held Wednesday evenings Oct 1 through Nov 5 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. These will be hybrid gatherings, so you may attend in-person or via Zoom. If you are interested in being a part of these conversations, a signup sheet is posted in Fellowship Hall or you can contact the church office.

This Sunday, September 14th, we will be welcoming Reverend Lark Hapke to Ivanhoe as our new Interim Minister. We hope you can join us for Worship at 10 am, and for the Welcoming Reception being held in Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. We are excited to begin partnering in ministry with Rev. Lark and look forward to growing in faith and service together.

This Sunday, September 7, is Ivanhoe’s Rally Day and we will be kicking off another year of Sunday School and youth programs. To go along with Rally Day, we will also be hosting a Flat Jesus Fair in Fellowship Hall after Worship. Throughout the summer, the Congregation has taken Flat Jesus along on all their travels and adventures and celebrations. He has traveled to Portugal, Washington DC, Italy, Greece, Florida, Vermont, Michigan, Alaska, and too many other places to mention. He has repelled in Costa Rica, taken a piano lesson, visited dear friends, joined in meals, played soccer, gardened, gone to the theater, and even attended Game Night. At our Flat Jesus Fair on Sunday, our children will be sharing pictures and stories of all the adventures and travels they shared with Flat Jesus over the past few months. We hope you can join us as we celebrate our Flat Jesus summer and our new Sunday School year!

Please join us this Sunday - August 31 at 10 am, as we celebrate all the wonderful pets in our lives at our annual Pet Blessings Worship. After the weather has forced the relocation of our last two scheduled outdoor services to indoors, we are hopeful that the third time is the charm and we will be gathering outside beneath our beautiful oak tree. If your pet is unable, or unwilling, to travel - bring a photo to share and be blessed.

We had an awesome week at this year’s Vacation Bible School “Road Trip: On the Go with God.” There were Bible stories, fun games, and amazing science experiments. Another important aspect of VBS, is having our children involved in a mission project. It is a meaningful way for them to be connected to our church, our community, and the wider world. This year’s project was a food drive for Fremont Township. Our donations were delivered this afternoon, and they were so appreciative of the generosity of Ivanhoe Church. Thank you to everyone who helped with VBS and to everyone who contributed food and household items to our VBS food drive.

At Ivanhoe Church, we love our majestic old oak tree! It symbolizes our faith and inspired our mission phrase - “putting down roots, growing in faith, and reaching out in love.” Unfortunately, the July outdoor service under the oak tree had to be canceled due to the weather, but we are hopeful for a beautiful summer day this coming Sunday. Please join us on August 17 at 10 am, as we gather for Worship under our 100 + years oak tree.
