HELP US PRESERVE JOHNSON MEMORIAL CEMETERY
For more than 130 years, Johnson Memorial Cemetery has served as a final resting place for generations of Munday and Knox County families.
The cemetery’s history dates back to the earliest days of our community. In 1889, Knox County pioneer Andrew Jackson “A.J.” Johnson and his family settled near the land where the cemetery stands today. Johnson donated part of his farmland for a Primitive Baptist Church and later gave adjoining land for a cemetery. The church, which also served as an early school, was eventually relocated and that land became part of the cemetery. Some of the graves at Johnson Memorial date back to the 1890s.
Today, Johnson Memorial Cemetery is cared for through the efforts of the Johnson Memorial Cemetery Association and its board members. Maintaining a cemetery of this size and age requires continued work and resources: From mowing and groundskeeping to repairs, equipment, trees, roads and the unexpected needs that arise throughout the year.
WE NEED OUR COMMUNITY’S HELP.
The cemetery has long depended on the generosity of families and community members to help provide the care it deserves. We are asking anyone with a connection to Johnson Memorial, or simply a desire to preserve an important part of our community’s history, to consider helping.
There are many ways to make a difference: monetary donations, memorial gifts, volunteering your time, providing equipment or materials, donating professional services, or simply lending a hand when a need arises.
Every contribution, large or small, helps.
Johnson Memorial Cemetery holds more than headstones. It holds the names, stories and history of generations of people who called this community home. Caring for their final resting place is a responsibility we share and a way of honoring those who came before us.
Please help us keep Johnson Memorial Cemetery a beautiful, peaceful and respectable place for generations to come.
