The festival of Shavuot begins at sunset, May 21, ending at sundown on Saturday, May 23. It is celebrated exactly seven weeks after the second Passover seder, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Feast of Weeks. Although Shavuot began as an ancient grain harvest festival, the holiday has been identified since biblical times with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

Many contemporary Jews will also read the Book of Ruth - who is considered one of the first converts to Judaism - taking the Torah into her life. Another way to commemorate is to simply study Torah in community!

The seven-weeks between Passover and Shavuot is known as “the omer” period. An omer (“sheaf”) was an ancient measure of grain, and refers to the barley offering brought to the Temple on the second day of Passover.

Many Jews are in the period of "Counting the Omer" which has had different meanings over the millenia. Read more about this practice: https://reformjudaism.org/jewish-holidays/counting-omer

With all that is going on in this world (US/Iran/Israel, Austin... just to name a few) - and the heightened emotions, we pray for the safety of all those in harm's way. We mourn the American and Israeli soldiers and the civilians whose lives have been lost, and we hold close all those who are suffering.

Tonight, Purim begins; The Megillah we will read tonight night tells the story of a plot hatched in ancient Persia (today's Iran) to destroy the Jewish people. Through the courage of Esther and Mordechai, and with G-d's help, the tables turned.

Celebrate Purim with your friends and family tonight, may we all be safe, with a measure of holiday joy. Chag Purim Sameach.

This evening the minor holiday of Tu B'shevat begins. Called the “Birthday,” “New Year of the Trees” and “Jewish Earth Day,” this was sparked by Leviticus 19:23. This minor holiday started as a date for farmers to record the age of their trees. Tu B'shevat has become a time to connect traditional Jewish values of taking care of the Earth with modern environmental values.
