Sunday Reflection:
God’s Promise to Satisfy Us

As we reflect on satisfying our hunger, thirst, and longing with a view to eternity, it becomes clear that God’s intention isn’t for us to disregard earthly pleasures. The things that bring us joy and satisfaction in our everyday lives are gifts from the Lord—given to enjoy, of course, but also to serve as important reminders of the satisfaction He promises.

In His love and mercy, God promises much: to faithfully stay with us (Deuteronomy 31:6, Matthew 28:20), give us wisdom (James 1:5), fulfill every need we have (Philippians 4:19), meet us where we are (James 4:8), and reveal what we’re to say in hard situations (Matthew 10:19), to name a few. We can look to these promises as we wait for His return, knowing that each earthly joy is but a glimpse of what is to come.

Think about it
•Think of something you genuinely enjoy or find satisfying. Is it easy to see this as a reminder of the joy God offers?

•When Christ’s promises are realized, our souls will be satisfied. How does reflecting on His promises help you in your pursuit of righteousness and, ultimately, eternal satisfaction?

Rex Neil Hammond Sr., 87, of Muncie, passed away May 26, 2026. He was born September 14, 1938, in Hartford City.
Rex built a life grounded in commitment and integrity. He retired from his job at Indiana Steel and Wire after over 30 years of service, where he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and the respect he showed to everyone he encountered.

His faith was the foundation of his life. As a devoted member of Fellowship Baptist Church, he served joyfully through music, playing guitar during services and special gatherings. His music was an offering—simple, heartfelt, and filled with the sincerity of his devotion. He also found daily comfort and strength in reading his Bible, a practice that shaped his character and guided his steps.

Rex is survived by his wife, Dixie Hammond; children, Todd, Jeff, and Scott; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather Friday, June 5, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana, 47304. A funeral service to honor his life will follow at 1:00 PM at Elm Ridge.

Sacrifice

2 Samuel 24:22-24 "And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver."

During World War II a young soldier named David Webster of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne wrote his mother: "Stop worrying about me. I joined the parachutists to fight. I intend to fight. If necessary, I shall die fighting, but don’t worry about this because no war can be won without young men dying. Those things which are precious are saved only by sacrifice."

Scripture often refers to the Christian life as a war—a spiritual battlefield. To answer the question of hymn writer Isaac Watts, we will not be carried to the skies on flowery beds of ease. And there is no victory apart from sacrifice. Just as our salvation was purchased at great cost, overcoming the enemy and walking in the Spirit require that we be willing to give up some things in order to triumph.

Whether it is large or small, there should be nothing we hold onto so tightly that it becomes more important to us than pleasing God. Paul said that if he knew eating meat would create an offense to others, then, "I will eat no flesh while the world standeth" (1 Corinthians 8:13). Willingness to submit our desires and dreams to God places us in a position to receive His blessings.
