Our sermon from Sunday: When you are afraid, fear the Lord. That's the message of Psalm 34, an acrostic psalm that presents the A-Z topics about fear. Fear has two connotations in this psalm, a fear of trouble that drains you and a fear of the Lord that sustains you. In times of grief, loss, sorrow, trouble and fear, we might be tempted to run to other solutions that will let us down, lead us to sin, make us hurt ourselves or others. So this psalm teaches: when you are afraid, fear the Lord.

Our sermon on Sunday: God teaches Christ-followers self-defense in Ephesians 6:10-18. Typically called "the armor of God," the things discussed in this text are more tactics than items. We are taught by God how to make good and healthy choices on the hard days when we face trials, sorrow, loss, grief, temptation, addiction, pain. As God permits challenges into our lives to refine us and grow us, he gives us opportunity to employ his tactics of spiritual warfare, and we can discover that we are strong in Christ.

Psalm 77 is the expression of a man who has both deep, negative emotion and vibrant, relentless faith in God. They are not mutually exclusive. We find permission to grieve in this psalm, and then we find a God who is older than our sorrows, who will comfort with all power, all wisdom and all love. God will make a way through the grief. We have to go through the grief. God will go through it with us.

Our sermon on Sunday: People who do not follow Jesus can, of course, be unusually kind. Paul finds an island full of people like this on Malta in Acts 28. Unusually kind people still need the gospel. They don't outgrow their need for it by being kind, even unusually so. And Christians can be unusually tried; Paul certainly was. And such Christians do not outgrow their need for the gospel too, as they must rely on the grace and mercy of God and not their endurance or righteousness. Simply put, we will always bear a cross, always endure trials and testing, and always experience the refining fire of God (which we should not be calling spiritual warfare). In all of that , one thing holds true: We still need the gospel, that Jesus died for us and is at work saving us, because a loving Father is watching over us.

Our sermon this past Sunday: Christ is in power. What has a Christian to fear? Acts 27 is the living-out of the New Testament letters of Paul to Christians to have faith in Christ. By faith in Christ, while the world is making a mess, getting into predicaments, causing us to live through those situations with them, we can be a blessing. We can be the ones who bring hope, blessing, and invitation to others in the midst of a crisis, even a crisis that brings us pain as well.
