Our Story

The Asokarama Monastery was established in 2015. It is the very first Myanmar Buddhist monastery in Michigan. Prior to that, the Buddhist community in Michigan had to travel to neighboring states to attend Buddhist sermons, celebrations and activities. With the growth of the Myanmar community in Michigan, many had come to realize the need of having an own place of worship. With that in mind, under the guidance of Venerable Ashin U Wizaya and Ashin U Visakhana from Fort Wayne, Indiana, a working committee (Theravada Buddhist Association Michigan-TBAM) was formed in 2013 exploring the future establishment of a monastery. With goodwill, generous donations and numerous hours of DIY physical labor in upgrading the facility by many Myanmar dhamma friends, Asokarama Monastery finally opened its doors in the fall of 2015, providing a gathering place to learn, meditate and practice Buddhism at a quiet corner of Eaton County, on a nine acre plot surrounded by peaceful farmlands.
