Honored and delighted that today our church hosted a picnic for the crew members of the USS John Paul Jones - an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer based here in Everett, WA -- and their families, as they prepare for deployment next month. So wonderful and moving to talk with them. β€πŸ™πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

From Matthew, Senior Pastor at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church.
❀ I LOVE pastoring a church with so many thoughtful, creative people who love God and God's Word and who engage culture out of their life in Christ. It is the delight of a lifetime:

❀ "I'm currently reading a book about Jewish people in India," said an MPC member in his early 80s who just visited there, after a life that includes Army service in Vietnam, owning a hardware store, and working in politics.

❀ "Was anyone in your family in an internment camp?" asked an MPC member who is a retired marine mechanic, speaking to a Japanese-American magician, David Hirata, as David performed at our church Hilltoppers Luncheon and was talking about Japanese culture. David responded by sharing about family members who were, in fact, placed in internment camps. He painted a fascinating -- and sobering, convicting -- picture of the realities around it.

❀ "Here's a poem I wrote," said a 28 year-old MPC attender, who has joined our choir and has a heart for writing children's literature about Christian faith.

❀ We have an MPC member in their early 30s collaborating with family members to write a role playing computer game based on history. We have another in their 30s who wants to write a children's musical. We have a gentleman in his 80s who is quite a painter, and another in his 70s who is quite a woodworker. We have a retired Coast Guardsman who is an award-winning hortaculturalist, and a young lady in her late teens who was just accepted to UW and wants to study law. She sits at our Wed morning Bible study near a married couple -- both lawyers -- who just sold their law firm after decades of practice in Seattle. MPC is all that... and much more.

🌎πŸ”₯πŸ’¨β˜€οΈπŸŽ¨πŸͺ˜πŸŽ»πŸ™πŸ«‚ Genesis 1 continues... through Christ (2 Cor 5:17), in the Spirit's ongoing outpouring (Acts 2:1-4), as we dance our lives in the palm of our gracious Father's merciful hand (Mt 5:45). The gifts of God... in the people of God... for the flourishing of God's world! J O Y !

COMING TO MUKILTEO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH THIS FRIDAY MAY 8, 5:00-8:00PM: Anglican priest Matt Canlis and his wife, award-winning theologian and author Julie Canlis (who did her PhD in theology at the University of St. Andrews-Scotland with Alan Torrance, a remarkable theologian). Matt and Julie will share about Matt's short documentary GODSPEED and Julie's book THEOLOGY OF THE ORDINARY. We'll eat pizza and watch Matt's film, which is about his experience of relational ministry as a pastor in Scotland. We'll have Q & A with Matt. And then we'll hear Julie give a talk on theology and life.

This event, as a surfer might stay, will be p u r e s t o k e.
All are welcome! Pizza is free!
(Please FB message me if you want to join us and if you did not get to sign up at our church... just so we have enough pizza!)

Wonderful to have my friend and teacher to me and many, theologian Dr. Marty Folsom (who did his PhD with the great Alan Torrance at the University of Otago), in our pulpit this morning at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church. Marty took us into the garden with God, emphasizing the relational, personal and loving nature of the biblical Triune God of grace, as he reflected out of his latest book, THE PSALMS: SANCTUARY OF THE SOUL. We were so blessed.

Jill and I had a wonderful time at our Presbytery of the Northwest gathering in Sandy, Oregon this weekend. There are 42 churches represented in our Presbytery from Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. We are the largest ECO Presbytery in the USA, in both geography and the number of churches.

Our guest preacher Rev. Kathy Giske-Director of Middle East Partners, this morning at MPC. She taught us from the book of Esther and shared with us an update about how the Lord is at work in the Middle East. Hidden in the rubble and mess, she said, there is another reality at work, in Jesus Christ and His church.
