Daily scripture for thought from Chaplin Ron.
Hebrews 11:25
"CHOOSING RATHER TO SUFFER AFFLICTION WITH THE PEOPLE OF GOD, THAN TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF SIN FOR A SEASON."
In 1920, the management of the Boston Red Sox made the choice to trade Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. After joining them, Ruth hit more home runs than the entire Red Sox team in 10 out of 12 seasons. They made the wrong choice. Choices are a daily part of our lives, often resulting in significant consequences, such as the Babe Ruth trade.
The writer of Hebrews presented a roll call of faith, (Hebrews 11:1-40), and Moses indeed belongs on that list. In verses 23-26, we are presented with two choices that greatly affected the course of history. The first was made by two slaves in ancient Egypt who chose to defy Pharaoh's edict to kill all the male Hebrew babies. They hid their baby son in a waterproof ark (basket) that was providentially found by Pharaoh's daughter, who ironically hired Moses's own parents to raise him (Exodus 2:1-10).
The second choice was Moses's decision to give up his position of influence and wealth in Egypt to side with God's enslaved people. He chose to identify with them, becoming an object of scorn. Though Moses was reared in the luxury of Egypt's palace and assured of all the things that men strive for, he learned that it's not the possession of things but the forsaking of them for the glory of God that brings rest.
Faith banks on eternity. We weigh momentary pleasures against eternal joy in heaven. What will you choose?
Think about your choices against eternal joy in heaven.
