Transfiguration Sunday
Welcome:
Call to Worship:
One: Come, let us worship God,
All: singing joyful songs of praise!
One: For the glory of the Lord shines upon us,
All: and calls us forth with thanksgiving.
One: Let us turn to the mountaintop,
All: and let us give God the glory.
Opening Hymn: #191 “We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding”
Call to Confession
In faith and in hope, we trust that God is merciful and just and receives our prayers with grace.
In humility and with meekness, let us confess our sin together.
Prayer of Confession
Holy Lord, we confess that we do not always seek the light of your way. We are satisfied to dwell in darkness, holding fast to the comforts of material fortune. We ignore the needs of others, and selfishly look the other way when our neighbors are oppressed. In your merciful way, help us to establish your equity in the world. Move us to protect creation and ensure equality, that all of our siblings may have a share of your abundance and the safety of your peace, and that the light of your face may shine upon all creation.
Assurance of Pardon
We are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved. The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to
everlasting. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
All: Amen.
Gloria Patri
Lectionary Readings
Psalm 99
Luke 9:28–36 (37–43a)
Sermon Message:
Affirmation of Faith: Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.15
God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross,
and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ
to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things
to serve the purpose of God’s love.
