Exploring Wisdom and Compassion: Further Steps Along the Path of Zen
with Danica Shoan Ankele, Sensei and Gokan Bonebakker, Osho

July 10-12, 2026

Within the dharma, wisdom and compassion are sometimes spoken of as the two wings of a bird—we need both of them to fly. We can nurture these qualities in how we engage our life as a field of practice.

The Further Steps retreats are intermediate level retreats which can be taken more than once. They provide opportunities to experience more extended periods of silence and zazen, explore Zen training through teaching and discussion, and engage in face-to-face teaching.

During the morning, we will focus on zazen, looking at developing concentration, working with thoughts and emotions, and what it means to cultivate compassion as part of a meditative practice. In the afternoon, our focus will shift to how we can develop our practice off of the cushion.

This weekend retreat is for anyone taking their next step on the Path and is open to anyone who has visited the Monastery or Temple, including for Introductory Weekends, Dharma Gates and Sunday programs.

There are three Further Steps theme retreats offered throughout the year, each with a different focus, including The Study of the Self, Practice on the Path of Liberation, and Exploring Wisdom and Compassion.

Online Summer Art Practice Series — When the World Becomes Colorful with Jody Hojin Kimmel, Sensei

June 12 - August 7th

This summer we’ll explore color as a living presence—working from our home spaces, indoors and out. Through collage and simple, improvisational practices, color becomes form, sound, movement, and feeling—drawn from the textures of our own lives.

What is the sound of red? How does purple move? Where does color live in the body? What color is this moment, this mood, this encounter?

If you’re a newcomer, welcome to this online art practice collaboration. You can start where you are, we all have the experience necessary. Participants can work in any medium (s) in your home studio and on ZOOM with inspiring Dharma words and prompts offered by Hojin Sensei to spark the fire of our innate creativity.

Date & Time: Fridays, 10:30am - 12pm, June 12 | July 3, 10, 31 | Aug 7

Interested in Zen training?

Residential training is a uniquely powerful way to study and practice Zen. It offers time and space for you to delve into your deepest questions about life and death, as well as a refuge from the consumerism, distraction and self-centered ambition of contemporary culture.

Training is guided by the abbot, Shugen Roshi, and resident teachers Shoan Sensei and Gokan Osho, all longtime monastics with decades of experience between them. If you have a serious interest in Zen training, and the flexibility to step out of your ordinary life for a period of a week, a month, or longer, then residency may be for you.

In some ways residency will exceed your expectations, providing you with a transformative experience that continues to unfold in deep and subtle ways long after you leave. In other ways, life here can be very ordinary, and learning to let the mind settle down takes time and the daily continuity of applied practice.

Ango Art Practice: The Tuning Fork of the Heart
Online With Hojin Sensei
May 1

This Friday, May 1st, Hojin Sensei will continue ango art practice online.

Resonance arises when we enter the world with openness and receptivity — willing to be startled, willing to be made unfamiliar — so we can feel what calls to us. In this practice, we begin with simple perception. What vibrates? What draws your attention? What creates a subtle hum of recognition in the body?

Online May 7-10
Words and the Wellspring of Great Peace, Ango Intensive with Shugen Roshi

This online version of the Ango Intensive retreat will start Thursday evening with opening remarks and zazen.

Retreat sessions on Friday and Saturday will begin with zazen, "turning words" and discussion from 10am-12:30 pm and 2-5 pm.

Join us also for the Sunday program, 9am-noon.

The Zen tradition is rich in live words—turning words—language that speaks from deep within the heart of wisdom and shifts entrenched patterns of mind.

In this Intensive, we will explore the role and spiritual power of language within the Zen tradition and study teaching verses by Master Hongzhi, a 12th century teacher of the silent illumination practice of zazen.

Combining zazen with deep study of the Ango materials, this weekend retreat is an excellent way to deepen our understanding and lived practice.

Chado: The Zen Art of Tea
May 14-17, Thursday-Sunday, at Zen Mountain Monastery

The principles of a traditional tea ceremony are harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. These instructions from 16th century Japanese tea master Rikyu bring us into a heart-based alignment with ourselves and all beings. The term chado means “the way of tea,” indicating that, like zazen and like other Zen arts, this is a practice that gets richer with repetition, without the constraints of an imagined perfection to be attained beyond the present, unfolding moment.

This retreat is for both new tea students as well as seasoned enthusiasts. Join experienced tea ceremony practitioners Pei-Tsen Tao, Naomi, Hobai Pekarik and Ikebana Associate Master Kozen Williams for an ongoing exploration of tea ceremony amid the flowering branches of spring on Tremper Mountain, and with the companionship of each other and all beings.
