Yesterday was another amazing work day! Our painters were able to finish up at the school, and our concrete volunteers were able add the finishing touches to one wall and work on a new one. Some of our team members stayed at the Mission and worked in landscaping, planting over 200 shoots of a flowering plant to help beautify the Mission. Our church should be incredibly proud of all attendees for humbly serving, working extremely hard, and without any complaining all week! They represented our church and Christ Jesus well through their many acts of selflessness. I am most proud of how this group has included one another and cared for one another every step of the way.🩷

After work, we went back to the Mission to get cleaned up for worship. We attended mass at the Santa Gertrudis. To say the church was breathtaking would be an understatement. They had fresh flowers comparable to what you would see at a wedding, but they keep them out every day with the help of volunteers who do the floral design and arrangement. The priest (who arrived 45 minutes late, due to serving another parish), spoke about the power of experiencing Christ for oneself, personally, and not simply knowing Him. He said that it is not enough to simply “know” about Jesus, it is essential that one “experience” Jesus in their heart. He greeted us with a warm “Welcome”, and asked if we were from the same state where Kentucky Fried Chicken originated. 😃

All in all it was an amazing day filled with many highs and no lows. We are grateful for God’s blessings on us and thank each of you for holding us in prayer, as we serve and experience the beautiful country of Costa Rica.

Yesterday was a day filled with deep joy and also deep sadness. We are discovering the unending beauty of Costa Rica and its people each new day, and also the immense suffering.

We had another productive workday at the middle school. Continuing our work on the retaining wall, and beginning a new wall, in a new space where it often floods. Our group has been able to completely paint two classrooms and help with the finishing touches on another. Today we begin painting the third classroom.

Last night we were able to deliver the food boxes to the “precarios” (precarious place) which is a slum area. The extreme poverty and need was overwhelming to behold for all group participants. We were able to deliver 15 boxes of food, that will help feed a family for a month, The families were very grateful for the offering and it was our joy to serve and see the smiles! The sad news is that we only saw the top of the slum area, and it seemed to go down the hill beyond what our eyes could see. We acknowledge that the work we did yesterday is only a drop in the bucket of an even greater need. If you could, when you see this post, please offer a prayer for those living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, and pray for a miracle of multiplication to happen in that place, just as it did long ago in the feeding of the 5,000 . Thank you!

Yesterday, we arrived at the Mission and were able to get settled in and enjoy a tasty lunch. After lunch, we traveled to a local grocery store to purchase items for families in need. For every person that comes to work at the Mission, there is a box of beans, rice, cooking oil, and essentials to help.
After the shopping spree, we enjoyed a tasty dinner, some devotional time and conversation, follow by an early bedtime, after a very long travel day.

Today, we had the joy of waking up to a beautiful day and delicious breakfast, after which time we went to serve at a local middle school (Liceo Experimental Bilingual School) where student take classes in both Spanish and English. At the school, half of our group painted two classrooms, and the other half of the group worked to build a retaining wall that will help keep the classrooms from flooding.

After a full workday, we returned to the Mission for dinner, a karate class, a time of reflection as a group, and a time of fellowship. We even watched a playback of the McNabb musical. It was a full and fun day all around!

We have already experienced God’s provision towards our group, and we continue to pray for Christ’s love to guide our every step and all our actions. Join us in praying for another great and safe work day tomorrow.
