Worth Asking About
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Most of us spend our lives answering a question nobody asked us out loud.
What am I worth?
We answer it with our output. With our approval. With how many people needed us today. We check our phones to see if the answer has come in yet — a reply, a like, a word of thanks — and when it hasn't, we assume the verdict is in and it isn't good.
But look at where the Bible first answers that question. Not at the end of your life, after the resume is complete. Not after the grades, the promotion, the ministry. In the first chapter of the Bible, before you had done a single thing — before there was anything to earn or fail — God says it plainly: in the image of God created he him.
Notice how verse 27 refuses to move on. Three times it says the same thing. Made in His image. Made in His image. Male and female made He them. The repetition is deliberate — God will not let you skim past this. He is not describing what you might become if you try hard enough. He is declaring what you already are.
And notice something else. Every other act of creation in Genesis 1 is spoken — "Let there be." But here God pauses. "Let us make man." You are not a formula. You are a decision. Before you existed to ask the question, there was a God who chose to make you, on purpose, in His own likeness.
That means the worth you have been chasing was never up for grabs. It was given. You did not invent yourself, and you do not have to keep inventing yourself. The One who made you in His image is not waiting to see if you measure up. He already said what you are.
So if the question is still echoing in you this morning, hear the answer that came first — before the noise, before the striving, before the phone. You were made in His image. That was true before you did anything at all.
Your worth is not measured by what you produce. It was declared over you in the first chapter of the Bible, before you had done anything — and it has never been revoked.
Father, I have spent too long trying to earn a worth You already gave me. Quiet the voice that tells me I am only as valuable as what I accomplish. Remind me today that I was made in Your image — deliberately, personally, on purpose. Let that truth settle deeper than the noise. In Jesus' name, amen.
