May have one more chance to catch the northern lights

Friday night brought spectacular views of the Northern Lights to the Chicago area and to parts of the southern United States, but after the spectacle fizzled on Saturday, could we get one more shot at seeing it?

That time when our mailman rings the doorbell and asks "Do you know what that big bird is?" Yes, it's a Sandhill Crane. It appeared across the street at the church. We have watched and heard them for years as they migrate over our neighborhood in the spring and fall but we've never seen one land here. It eventually flew up, displaying its awesome size and surprising gracefulness, and headed north, where they spend the warmer months in Wisconsin. With Angela Nicolosi

Today we made a birthday (mine) trip to the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens in Rockford, IL. Lovely weather. Highlight at the Gardens was the butterfly house, where they fly freely. You are given a little stick with a sponge attachment which holds the delicious Gatorade (!!!) which draws the butterflies. Butterflies love Angela and here are some pics of some new friends she made, with Angela Nicolosi

Please join us to Share Our Caring!! South Church Cares is volunteering with Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) at 740 Wiley Farm Court, Schaumburg, IL 60173. We will be there from 11:30 AM – 1:15 PM on Saturday, November 4.



For those who have not volunteered with FMSC, volunteers work to pack bags with nutritious dried food and seal them for shipping. These packets get added with water and give fully nutritious meals to those in need. For those who aren’t able to stand, there are other jobs such as putting sticker labels on the bags. It is very rewarding. Before the serve, you will get a short introduction that will tell you about their work and is sure to inspire you.



One other note, women must remove jewelry such as earrings before serving. They have lockers there, but I recommend not wearing jewelry to the event.

The South Church Cares Committee partnered with Clean Up Give Back on Saturday to clean up the area of Mt Prospect Rd & Rand. Together we collected several large bags full of trash! Joan Smith, Melissa Ciske, Virginia Moore & Kieth Baumann and the rest of the committe, thank you for planning this great service event!
