A TESTIMONY OF FAITH
There seems to be a great deal of “religious” Americans calling for a pro-God agenda. Post after post across social media are challenging people to use the term God, instead of any other term like Creator, Love, Light, Universe, Source, Father, Great Mother, etc.
As a Quaker, I feel called to testify that I believe in and worship God, whom I call on by many names. However, my definition may not be yours and let’s face it, God has been packaged in some pretty ugly wrappers this century: Judgment, righteousness, false piety, pro-politics, Old Testament Judge and Jury, etc.
Let us not confuse God with organized religion’s finite definition of God. When I hear people use other terms than God, I usually interpret this to mean that they have been burned by organized religion but still long for something bigger than everything.
Giving them freedom to call God by other names honors their journey toward a Source of strength, power, and love.
Jesus taught me that we are all in this together and that we must meet people where they are and love them unconditionally.
Years ago, my neice told my mother she no longer believed in God because of her warped religious upbringing that saved some and condemned others. Instead of “correcting” her, my mother just smiled and said, that’s okay. God believes in you.
I remember that whenever I long to “correct” (control) how others approach faith and I am so very grateful that Quakerism is based on testimonies rather than doctrine or dogma.
