Last night I watched the documentary about the murder of a pastor’s wife, and something rose up strongly within me—a righteous anger and a deep grief over what happens when abuse, manipulation, intimidation, and control are allowed to operate unchecked.

We need to stop sanitizing destructive behavior simply because it happens around a pulpit, a ministry, or people carrying spiritual titles. Abuse does not become acceptable because someone can preach. Manipulation does not become spiritual authority because someone has a title. Control is not covering. Intimidation is not leadership. Blackmail is not accountability. Screaming, threatening, humiliating, sexually exploiting, or psychologically controlling another person is not “strong leadership.” It is abuse.

When destructive behavior is wrapped in spiritual language and protected by ministry structures, the damage can spread far beyond one relationship. Families are shattered, leaders are wounded, congregations become fearful, and people lose their voices. Victims begin questioning themselves while unhealthy behavior is protected because of gifting, position, influence, or reputation.

I have personally witnessed destructive patterns in churches and ministries—the manipulation, accusations, screaming and shouting, emotional blackmail, sexual exploitation through manipulation, and the use of fear to silence and control people. We cannot keep calling this church culture.

I have also seen leaders act as though they are above the law—willing to break national laws while knowing that their actions could jeopardize their ministries, organizations, and the people who trust them. That cannot be ignored or excused because of someone’s spiritual position. When credible evidence exists, I believe it is time for these ministries and individuals to be named responsibly, truthfully, and lawfully—not out of revenge, but to protect people, expose wrongdoing, and prevent further harm. Naming names must be handled with care, supported by verifiable facts, and pursued through appropriate legal and safeguarding channels.

There is nothing Kingdom about controlling people through fear. There is nothing apostolic about intimidation. There is nothing prophetic about manipulation. There is nothing pastoral about protecting an institution or reputation while wounded people bleed in silence.

Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Gifting is not character. A microphone does not prove maturity. A title does not prove integrity. A large ministry does not prove someone is healthy. Spiritual language must never become camouflage for abusive behavior.

The Church needs discernment again. We need courageous leaders who will confront abuse instead of hiding it, protect vulnerable people instead of protecting reputations, establish genuine accountability instead of personality cults, and refuse to allow fear and manipulation to govern the house of God.

Silence can become an environment in which abuse continues. When credible allegations of abuse arise, they must be taken seriously. Where criminal conduct is suspected, it belongs in the hands of the appropriate authorities—not merely behind closed doors in a ministry office.

The Church belongs to Jesus Christ. His sheep are not commodities. His people are not possessions. His sons and daughters were never created to live under intimidation and fear.

It is time to clean the house. It is time to confront unhealthy systems. It is time to restore accountability. It is time to protect the wounded. And it is time for leaders to understand again: WE ARE SHEPHERDS OF GOD’S PEOPLE—NOT OWNERS OF THEM.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

May God purify His Church and raise up leaders whose authority comes from character, whose strength is demonstrated through humility, and whose leadership looks like Jesus.
