Wesley at CMU

Wesley at CMU Wesley at CMU is the campus community of the United Methodist Church at Central Michigan University. We worship together Sundays at 7 p.m. All are welcome!

Our mission is for all to know themselves as God’s Beloved and to be God’s love in the world. Regular activities during the academic year include Sunday worship, Community lunches, free movies, mid-week study gathering, and service opportunities. Our informal service typically includes music, prayer, Scripture and Sermon, and Communion offered to all. Coffee and goodies are always on!

This Saturday generations of Wesley at CMU members and supporters gathered to celebrate 100 years! We enjoyed reading through old newspaper clippings and writing our memories of Wesley to create art. Following, Pastor and Director Audra shared a sermon and everyone broke bread together. Bishop Bard blessed the delicious chicken lunch! While finishing up we heard from the pop up choir (Wesley alumni and current members). Thank you to everyone who made this celebration happen! We always appreciate your support and you’ve impacted generations.

This Sunday we gathered to celebrate Easter with the Crowded Table Dinner Church, centering around Jesus rising in love and breaking open the tomb. We cracked open geodes to discover something beautiful while enjoying a South Asian inspired dinner. Thank you to Meredith for performing a special song and big thank you to Jacob and Audra + family for making the meal!

Even though it’s April Fool’s Day, we’re not joking when we say we’ve had a full, meaningful, and fun Holy Week! On Palm Sunday, we marched with people of faith across the state in a Palm Sunday protest, calling for practices and policies that feed hungry people, care for the sick, and welcome our immigrant siblings.

Later that night, we also played “Lent Madness,” voting on our favorite Christian saints and holy disrupters in head to head matchups. Desmond Tutu came out on top for our Wesley community! We finished the evening with an Easter egg hunt, complete with glow sticks and candy hid by our friends and Rev. Jess Hart.

Today, on holy Wednesday, we searched for the last missing eggs and enjoyed a build your own grilled cheese bar for community meal.

But the fun’s not over! Join us at 7pm on Sunday for Easter Dinner Church featuring a homemade Southeast Asian feast, welcoming community, and geode smashing in honor of resurrection and God’s love breaking in always and everywhere!

We wrapped up our week of learning and serving in Pittsburgh with a final day of volunteering and a fun day in the city!

On Thursday, we visited the Blessing Board, a non profit focused on supplying families in need with free furnishings. During our visit, we met refugee families, people transitioning from incarceration and homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, single parents, and more. We helped usher families through the process of intake, choosing furnishings, and loading their new furniture in vans and trucks.

Later that day, we also met with the leaders of Bridge to the Mountains, an organization that works across Pittsburgh to build relationships of respect and care with unhoused community members.

On Friday, we enjoyed the city on our “fun day” by breaking off into groups to visit the zoo, the Heinz History Center, and the Strip District.

As we head home to Michigan, we are incredibly grateful to our hosts in Pittsburgh and the network of supporters who helped make this trip possible!

Days 2 and 3 of service and learning kept us busy and engaged!

Tuesday, we spent time at the Hugh Lane Wellness Center, an organization focused on holistic wellbeing for LGBTQ+ folks and community members with HIV positive status. We supported their work by sorting food donations to their Hugh’s Kitchen feeding programs, organizing closets and sheds, and learning about their wraparound services for adults and youth. That afternoon, we also met with local clergy to reflect on inclusion and mission in the church.

Wednesday, we worked with the Pleasant Valley Shelter, who serves men experiencing homelessness and other community members on the Northside. We organized storage spaces, sorted food in the pantry, and prepped the Free Store for community access. We also learned from their staff and other community leaders about the harm reduction and housing first models of care used to support people in the city.

Finally, we wrapped up the day with Banjo Night at the Elks Lodge—a local (and quirky!) celebration of community, music, and Pittsburgh!
