This morning I had a bill that needed to be mailed, but I didn't have time to drive into town to the post office. Instead, I slipped the envelope into our mailbox and raised the little red flag.

That tiny piece of metal has a simple but important purpose. It tells my mail carrier, “There's something here that needs your attention.”

Raising the red flag is like turning on a porch light to welcome a visitor or waving to a neighbor as they pass by.

The system is wonderfully simple.

The message: I have something ready to be picked up.

The action: Raise the flag before leaving home.

The result: The mail carrier stops instead of driving on by.

It saves time, removes uncertainty, and provides a clear signal that can be understood at a glance.

As I stood there with that little red flag raised, the Lord whispered something to my heart.

The flag wasn't there to make my mail carrier care about me. It simply let him know I was ready for him to stop.

The Lord doesn't need a signal to know where I am. His eyes are already upon me. His ears are already open to my prayers.

So perhaps the better question is not, “How do I get God's attention?” but, “How do I show God that my heart is ready to meet with Him?”

Every time I pray, I raise the flag.

Every time I open His Word, I raise the flag.

Every time I confess my sin, surrender my plans, or worship Him, I raise the flag.

Those moments don't persuade God to come near. He has already promised, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Instead, they position my heart to recognize the One who has been near all along.

Just as the raised mailbox flag says, “There's something here for you,” a seeking heart says, “Lord, I'm available. Speak to me. Teach me. Change me.”

Every morning we have a choice. We can leave the flag down and rush through the day on our own, or we can raise the flag of prayer and surrender, inviting God to do His work in our hearts.

Why do you go to church? You don’t have to go to church to go to heaven.

They’re right. Going to church doesn’t save you. Jesus does.

But let me ask you this… the next time you’re sick, don’t go to the doctor and see how that works out.

I go to church because I need it. I need the fellowship. I need the encouragement. I need the conviction. I need the reminder of who I am and whose I am.

Because I know sometime this week—probably sooner rather than later—I’m going to fail. I’m going to lose my patience. I may say something I shouldn’t say. I’ll fall short of the standard God has called me to.

I’m not perfect. Never have been. Never will be.

That’s why I go.

Church isn’t a place where perfect people gather. It’s a place where broken people come to worship a perfect Savior. It’s where we encourage one another, bear each other’s burdens, and grow together in our faith.

That building isn’t the church. It’s just a building.

The people inside who have been redeemed by the grace of God—that’s the church.

So no, I don’t go to church because I think it earns me a place in heaven. I go because I need a reset. I need to be reminded that I’m a sinner saved by the grace of God. I need to worship, to learn, and to be challenged to become more like Christ.

Hebrews 10:25 reminds us not to forsake assembling together. God knew we would need each other.

So I’ll keep showing up—not because I have to, but because I need to.

The final day of VBS was a hit! We love these children and would love for any that visited that do not have a church home to join us and for those that do please visit again soon!
