The multidirectional momentum surrounding the coming governance meetings demonstrates the church’s persistently competing visions of who should decide how clergy misconduct issues are handled, even as it prepares to try its primate.

The diocese calls for the release of documents related to the Stewart Ruch trial as the church's fraught process for revising Title IV comes to a vote.

Given the numerous pretrial motions, Bishop Ashey expressed uncertainty that Wood’s trial would be concluded by the year’s end and said “a good chance” existed that Wood will be exonerated, characterizing the allegations as coming from church staff who “felt aggrieved by the manner in which they were terminated as employees.”

A church court will hold hearings this week on motions in preparation for Archbishop Steve Wood’s July trial, including a request that it be closed to the public.

He has been accused of sexual harassment, bullying and plagiarism and faces three church charges: alleged violation of ordination vows, conduct giving cause for “scandal or offense” and sexual immorality.

(RNS) — Wood has filed a motion to dismiss the case, and the church court will hear arguments on that motion in May.

Somewhere along the way, I came to believe that what my priests and bishops thought of me was what God thought of me. When they approved of me, I felt safe. When they were displeased, I experienced it as being wrong before God.

I absorbed some unhealthy ideas in my ACNA experience, through sermons, pastoral conversations, community pressure, and my own deep desire to be seen as faithful. I was not naive or weak for believing them. There were good and true and beautiful ideas alongside the unhealthy ones. And there were rea

[ACNAtoo] called Lathrop GPM’s participation “inappropriate” in light of the firm’s “deficiencies” in investigating sexual misconduct allegations against Mike Bickle, former leader of the International House of Prayer; its legal defense of Roman Catholic bishops and dioceses in civil sexual assault cases; and its use of “scorched earth” tactics against victims described by the SNAP.

Lathrop will review the process that ended in a controversial acquittal, but the court record of the chaotic trial will remain under wraps.

On March 23, 2026, the Anglican Church in North America announced that it has retained Lathrop GPM to conduct an independent procedural review of the Title IV disciplinary process of Bishop Stewart Ruch. The update includes a brief scope for the investigation, but the ACNA declines to provide the engagement letter or commit to publicly sharing the subsequent findings.

The Rt. Rev. Julian Dobbs, acting archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America, has sued the Rt. Rev. Derek Jones, former head of the denomination’s chaplaincy jurisdiction, in federal court for defamation.

Bishop Julian Dobbs accuses former chaplaincy bishop Derek Jones of repeated false statements about his handling of two financial matters.

Across the ACNA, survivors, advocates, clergy, and lay members have repeatedly raised concerns about transparency and accountability in clergy disciplinary processes. Rev. Dan Alger's case is one that has surfaced publicly and illustrates how the pattern unfolds.

In May 2025, Bishop Neil Lebhar issued a judgment letter following a formal investigation of Rev. Dan Alger by Theresa Sidebotham of Telios Law . Bp. Lebhar wrote, “Significant action must be taken now. Within the disciplinary canons is the provision for a Godly Admonition (ACNA Canon IV.2.2)

The Rev. Esau McCaulley, who is promoting the diocesan version of the canceled event, expressed frustration in a blog post at what he called “an operating assumption that concern for abuse and sexism are stealth ploys that hide secret agendas, rather than a concern for the flourishing of all within our movement.”

Interim ACNA leader Julian Dobbs canceled the event on sexism and abuse prevention amid rancor that threatens to undo the church’s “two integrities” on women’s ordination.

If your goal as a Christian organization is to help people encounter and learn to trust God, then perhaps instead of protecting your rights and reputation, your go-to mantra should be, “in humility consider others as more important than yourselves,” or “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life (or credibility, or reputation, or ministry) for one’s friends.

Responding to misconduct claims with a posture of loving vulnerability will result in some surprisingly different courses of action. While admitting possible wrongs and centering the needs of those claiming harm may seem legally and socially dangerous, it is actually the most relationally healing ap

Conducted in private, the events of the trial itself largely remain a mystery. But the resignations of two members of the prosecution team gave a glimpse into some of the disputes that took place. And the court’s assertion that “no evidence demonstrated that Bishop Ruch willfully contravened canonical authority or habitually neglected episcopal responsibilities” has shocked some and brought relief to others.

As the denomination looks ahead to two additional bishops’ trials — one being the denomination’s first trial of a sitting archbishop who has been accused of sexual misconduct — the precedents set by the Ruch trial will have substantial bearing on the upcoming proceedings.
